I was out detecting the other day and the dog mauled 1 not a bad wee scrap really possum had the dog briefly by the ear/head then it made a dash for the tree just not quick enough....it got beaten to death with the pick....does that count as possuming ! ?

Hmmm well if that's the case I could be onto a real winner then as the dog not only catches possums but he plucks them at the same time:)

YES unfortunately we would have made much more $ picking up the slobbery fur than from the gold nuggets lol ...actually down these ways possums are pretty few in number these days to many 1080 drops I often keep an eye open for decent possum sign but haven't seen anything worth wile for a long time .

Yeah I enjoy putting lead into the air and taking down a few possums, its worth plucking them after you shoot them, more than pays for the ammo! Think my best is about 75 in a night.

yea mate usually try and get a few each winter. was gettin $135 a kilo last winter. dunno what it is this year. got a few properties round the area that i call into and spotlight. its better during winter as you only need 10-12 good fat bucks to get a kilo. me best haul in one night was 57 but that was on the west coast. fat buggers too. heaps of fun a!

Yeah 75 makes for a long night, finishing at 4am. Anyone know what its worth a kilo at the moment? I have a couple of kilos at home, which I got offered $100 a kilo for recently.

I used to do quite a bit of it once - I used Rabbit traps and still have a hundred or so of them - some of them are probably quite collectible - I still have about ten small bottles full of aniseed.

The last Opossum I got - notice I said Opossum - actually they are technically Possums but to me they are Opossums because that is what they were called for years and years. Now I had an argument with someone who knew better a while ago so for those who dont think that they are always called Opossums heres the proof! Anyway back to the story - on a property I own a while back I was pottering around in the barn and all of a sudden an opossum took off so I chased it - on this rare occasion I didnt have my heater and the only thing nearby was a block of wood so I chased it with that and when I caught up with it I beat it to death - then I plucked it - then I went to the truck to get a bag to put the fur in and when I went back the pile of fur was there but the Opossum had headed west...so if you see a naked Opossum around then you know what the story is.

And for all of you out there who think that Ace Lane traps are cruel then your pussy's - and not the sort I have a lustful attraction to - I have put a photo on of the wickedest most evil trap I have ever come across - it sort of appeals to my sense of humour.

Poison is the way to go only trouble is plucking a cold possum !
I usually skin them anyway especially good winter skins last time I put out a line was up sumner there was a shitload if them up there tracks x over each other all over the show I did a 2 hour line up 1 sper and down another went back 3 days later in the rain so my toilet paper trail was pretty hard to follow skinned only the good 1,s which was around 70 and I was only half way round but had to pull the pin as was getting dark so I would have guessed there would have been the same amount again .plenty of country out there I never endd up going back to that spot as the point of the trip was to see how many we're up there and what the skins were like as it turned out not very good got $4 each ! Was a bit early pluss in areas were there is high numbers there always fighting and loosing fur .

That is a nasty looking trap there lammy carnt say Iv seen 1 quite like that ...almost looks like modified teeth to me you didn't get a little board 1 day !!

Nope not bored and no the teeth are not modified at all - thats how it came - one jaw with a set of teeth that look like a comb and the other one plain - Andy got it right - they were used in Australia and so you never see ones like that in Kiwiland. Here in New Zealand though you can find heaps of different old timers and I know that I have kept about 20 different types which I used myself. Some had wire springs rather than flat springs and many had names on or a picture of a Moa or Letters for the maker.

Theres blokes out there who collect traps and nothing else.

Me I never get bored - only boring people get bored!

Come to think of it I am bored right now - thats why I look on here and doddle nothings to keep everyone amused.

I have to agree, a very nice trap Lammerlaw. I doubt any tree monkey ever pulled it's leg out of that one. I started catching the little buggers last summer, I was in disbelief when I came upon trap that was moving down the hillside one morning. Anyone know of anyone buying fur in CHCH?
