Hi there i am a beginner to gold fossicking and am planning a trip to the danseys pass area so was wondering if anyone knows of any places that would suit a beginner around there. I will be paning and running a sluice box. Any ideas would be great

Ended up making a trip down to danseys anyway and got a few flakes and some very fine gold not far up from the camp so i was quite impressed with my results for my first time out with a sluice box. Notice from another post that someone has submitted a claim over the area i will be totaly pissed if it goes through

Crown Minerals will almost certainly grant the permit......maybe if there is so many upset people you should get together and eather work out some sort of arraignment with the claim owner for panning only on a small section of river ''perhaps'' the claim owner has no interest in the area infront the camping ground.
just an idea.
and if that dosnt work you could just drown him or maybe a good group fossicking bludgeoning to death lol.....you should mention the latter first then start the negotiating !

I think the bludgeoning part should be left until after the negotiating. sort of a back up plan if the negotiating fails. I would certainly be a starter to try to work out an area for fossicking with the owner. is it possible to get a contact number or email add. for him though. I see the crown minerals gives a name but that's about it. how many would be prepared to pay a fee for the rights to do it. possible he may want a bit of cash in exchange and what sort of $ do you think it would be worth. if you go for an area around the camping ground would that not piss the owner off having people using his grounds purely to get access. maybe an area up or downstream would be better.

Or better still why not work in with the camping ground owner. He advertises the fossicking so uses the fact that there is gold in the stream it to attract custom - to me he will be missing out on a good marketing ploy if he does not work something out with the permit holders. In fact personally if in his situation I would have tried for a permit years ago to secure this.

yes some not bad ideas the holiday park owner will be definately annoyed if his marketing ploy gold panning is taken away. just looking at the proposed area and that claim is going to be massive. how long does it take for a permit to be approved?

I would think that for a fairly remote location for a camping ground a claim cost would be far more than he would recoup from campers coming to fossick. I guess he would have done it if it was commercially practical.

In my opinion ... I don't think the camp owner would care about the claim.

He probably makes very little out of people coming for that reason & those that do, won't be his concern ... it'll be them working on the claim, not him.

I suspect he gets more customers for the fishing or using the pass.

Talking to me dad last night, the local farmers & fishing people are not happy at all.

Yeah thats true. i can sure see why the fishermen are not happy with the thought of a dredge disturbing all the bottom killing of the feed.

Not true and indeed very far from it - do you know about dredging? My family were involved heavily in dredging in the 1960s right through to the present and together with a couple of others were pioneers it might be said in modern underwater dredging then floating dredges.

When we were dredging Eels loved to come and hover around near the area of disturbance to get the worms, insects and larvae that were exposed by the operation.

I would be interested to know where you got the information that dredging kills of the feed. If dredging kills off any feed at all then rest assured a flood would render rivers uninhabitable!

Lammerlaws quite right,I have often had fish hanging round the nozzle while dredging and any disturbance to the river bed is soon sorted out in the next fresh. destroying fish habitat is just another load of BS the hand ringing sandal wearers will try to use to keep everything the way they want it, no vehicles, no dogs, no fires,no dredging,no hunting and eventually, no access.Claim holders in the Nevis had problems with the historic places trust...we dont want gold mining here because of all the gold mining history in the valley, they said.gold dredgers will always be up against it,we have few friends outside our little community

I dredge in a very popular fishing spot and to my surprise in 3 years have not had 1 person complain at 1 point I had a guide operating on the same strech of river as me for a summer and no trouble at all infact they liked to look at it working ...any1 asks me if somehow I'm damaging the river which Iv only been asked about maybe 1c or twice by randoms answer is simple look at how much river bed gets moved in a flood let alone a real big event that can last for weeks .
