Hi All. Was privileged enough to spend a few hours detecting over Easter up at The Bay Of Islands. Just Stunning!
Thrilled to find a King George VI Silver Half Penny. In its past life had been used as a pendant.
Will post photo as soon as I've worked out how to do so! Gave the modern coinage to the kids that were following me round, along with an earring , fishing weight, key.

Nice find from a nice spot RM.
Sadly I think you will find it is plated copper not silver. :-(
I believe those pendants appeared around the time we changed to decimal currency.

Thanks for the info. Spent most of my time talking to a wonderful young woman whose ancestral family history was incredible! Was out on the Hole in the rock & dolphin cruise earlier that day & stopped at Urupukapuka. This Island was gifted by her (I think this is right) great great grandmother.
Back in Auckland now! Is it worth a visit to Takapuna Beach?

I like the pendant - its cool.

If ever you decide to put it on trademe I shall watch with great interest with the idea-in mind of flooding the market with silver plated New Zealand Halfpenny pendants as I have about 1 kg of halfpennies here and maybe it could be a good idea to convert them into pendants and flood the market!

If you are so generous as to give the Kids who follow you the modern coins and things you find then you may eventually have to change your forum name to 'Piedpiper'

I noted Mr Drunkbrothers comment about the Historical Places Act and thought to myself - "Yep that will be typical Kiwi Gestapo crap" - some poor sod gets done for going along with a metal detector removing pull tabs, bits and pieces and other rubbish from the beach and filling in the holes so theres no sign of your passing and a family can go there and build a horrendously ugly pile of sand with all sorts of rubbish placed on it to decorate it, call it a sand castle and its considered a work of art and no one says 'Boo'

Takapuna like most of the city beaches is a game of chance I feel.
Who know's it could be your lucky day. :-)

I guess an Act is an Act! I would prefer to thank Mr Drunkbrothers for the heads up!
Spoke to a number of people to ask about detecting on Paihia Beaches. This included the police. All the responses were positive ones. It would have been a privilege to find something of an historical nature to donate to a museum!
Won't be on Trademe or anything else! I just take pleasure in being outdoors, meeting great & interesting people
& finding anything is a bonus!
Non modern currency will be cleaned & given to my nephew to take to school.

Most responses are indeed positive and most people are supportive as they can see that you do no harm and indeed by removing rubbish you are doing a service.

Mr Drunkbrother seems a great guy and his ideas and suggestions are really ace but dont tell him I said that or it might go to his head.

Personally I hope that you do indeed find something of historical value and then use it to promote the positive side of metal detecting because that is what is needed. I think that the metal detecting laws of England are spot on and are what we need here as the greatest Archaeological finds in England are being discovered by metal detectorists who have no fear of disclosing their finds as they reap the rewards for doing so without recrimination from authorities - if we go down that track then all good.

May you find many gold rings and a sovereign or two!

What you need is a Portable Antiquities Scheme! As yet have not found anything that is classed as 'Treasure' but I live in hope! All our finds are recorded through our respective clubs & Finds Liaison Officers.

I absolutely love the link and as a serious collector of British coins I am intensely jealous of the great coin finds - some are truly amazing and indicative of the wonderful artifacts and coins to be found in not just Great Britain but also Europe as a whole.
I would have gone totally gaa gaa over the Edward the Confessor penny as it is 100 years older than my oldest penny and in remarkable condition.

Hi there Roleymoley, nice pendant. Paihia beach is safe to detect on, a popular place to be. An underwater detector would be the go,as its flat and calm there. I reckon there would be tonnes of stuff in that water.
