Hi guys...

Just like to let you guys know that my dredging gear has all been stolen this weekend from New Chum Gully up Arrow River. If anybody had seen any vehicles after 7pm on the 16.02.13 and before 9am on the 17.02.13 coming out of the Arrow gorge any information regarding those vehicles would be appreciated.

The gear was about 200 meters up New Chum Gully over some real rough terrain so whoever took it must have been watching us or would have pre planned it. I had two honda waterpumps, suitcase sluice box and wooden sluice box and hoses and nozzles. There had to be two people to carry all that gear out overnight .

Reward offered for the return of the gear no questions asked. Pictures to come!

There are arseholes born every minute - I do hope that you get it back and that the slimeballs are brought to justice.

makes me think that the little surveillance cameras set up could save a lot of money in the long run and also if enough people use them then scumsuckers would think twice about breathing near other peoples property.

that sucks man, just start asking round and keep asking. im sure the lowlives that took it will stuff up and open their mouths or someone will see your gear somewhere.
do any of the claim owners in the area have trail cams set up? lotsa poachers up there im sure one of them will have something setup to catch them.

The thing that is the most gutting is i had a brand new proline hp300 pump and blue chonda motor that i had got from Allan Dunford in Nasby the weekend before, it had only ran for an 1 hour or so. The suitcase box was quiet unique as well i chopped off the bars where you would place the tire tubes to make it more portable. Also had the original 5" stainless suction nozzle.

Would chaining it to a large tree be another deterrent?

do you have a claim on the area you were working ? because if not someone may have told doc or claim owner. and they would just take the gear without hesitation. just a thought

Dont have a claim, its was on private land, i spoke to the land owner and he was as shocked as i was, because the area in very inaccessible. in last 18months i only seen two people wondering down the creek. one was local police man looking for his dog and other a good mate on mine.
the assholes that took my gear were casing the spot.. waiting for me to leave my gear up there..

Looking at http://www.paydirt.co.nz/permit-map it appears to me that the entire arrow river (and all the "private" land around it) is covered by prospecting permit # 54356 https://data.nzpam.govt....Report.aspx?permit=54356

So I wouldn't go complaining about the stolen gear to anyone unless the gear is worth more than the fine/jail time for prospecting on someone else's claim.

i bet its some big bloody permit that covers half of otago, owned by a greedy 'investor?'

if you have a permit you should be made to use it. and keep it to a reasonable size, rather than locking the place up.

i've never seen any prospecting been done up there.

that's my view anyway.

good luck zimbo for getting your gear back.

the pricks prob vacuuming himself with it right now!

You may have been near someone elses 'patch' so to speak, and these someone else's are opportunists at the best of time, have a look around and u may find their green gold.

Unfortunately, we have to share the back country with these folks, and when I did work for 'the landowner' for the tracks we found several plots, so thats my guess where your gears ended up, they probably been using the creek as access.

My guess is that one of four types of people have taken it -
1) - DOC because you were in an area under their jurisdiction and they are waiting for someone to claim it back...Oh dear
2) - The prospecting licence holder or their agent in which case...Oh dear
3) - A greenie of the cultivation of wacky baccy type - in which case keep your eye open follow them and give them ten times what they do unto you.
4) - Opportunists - dishonest scum suckers who found it by accident then came back later to remove it.

Personally I think that the chances of getting it back are high - I think that the first two options would be decent enough to give you are warning and call it quits without taking the action further.
On my own property I immediately involve the police but never get them into trouble as such - I just ask that a warning be given and leave it at that - the second time is another matter. I would hope that DOC and the prospecting claim holder had the decency to do likewise.

My personal feelings - with the exception of freehold land which an individual has purchased and freeholded then all land belongs to the people of New Zealand and WE should have the rights - NOT the big bastards like Macraes and so on.
This is YOUR country and YOU should have the rights to put a small unit like yours where ever you wish within the State domain.
You younger guys have absolutely no idea how much we have gradually lost as our rights have been eroded away
1975 - Go anywhere youlike with a dredge and have fun, walk with a rifle down the main street to the gun shop to sell it or have it repaired, go anywhere you like tramping, panning, hunting and haviung fun as long as you ask the landowner - they never said no, smoke a ciggy where ever you want, ride a bike no helmet, no seat belts...and the list goes on.

To me you are simply a good old K1W1 having a nice time harming no one in the hills and I sure in hell hope you get your gear back and if it is arseholes who took it then I hope that the Haemorrhoids they suffer come from the end of a long shovel handle.

Good luck - Im on your side!

lammerlaw,

zimbo is a good mate of mine and it pisses me off immensely that this has happened in these parts.

i don't think it was doc. not their land.

i don't think it was other claim holder either. they're all decent folk those i've met. and why would they go looking for trouble. it wasn't any of their claims. in fact its private land that the land manager knows whats going on and they aren't impressed that this has been nicked off their property either.

as far as the wacky goes i know there is a bit grown up that way. that said its pretty rough country. if you can pull off a crop up there i think you deserve it. i doubt a grower would cause trouble if it was near their patch as they will only get trouble back. as zimbo stated the only person he saw up here all last summer was a policeman, so they are onto it up that way. they aren't stupid either.

i personally think it was an opportunist and i believe they are known and will get whats coming. its a small community round here and everyone generally looks out for each other esp when someones wronged like this. zimbo only just bought a motor and had hardly broken it in.

hopefully the guys involved will think, if they can, and drop it off at zimbo's or the cop shop and he will be happy to get it back. i think it might have been a bit of the old act now think later.

it would seem to me to be pretty tough to either sell any of it or to ever be able to get to use it themselves.

you have to wonder why everyone doesn't have gps or cameras, but then again it was remote and rugged enough not to expect this to happen in the first place. some people really don't have anything better to do.

Thanks for pointing this out, i had no idea i was on a prospecting claim until today, it was only put up on the claim map 2nd feb it looks like..
does anyone have a phone # for the owners on this claim as i would still like to go up there.

And as for your comment on complaining, wouldn't you if all your gear was nicked, i paid for that gear with gold, sweat and blood.
