Hi all,Yesterday went to go dredgeing, and found all my dredge and dive gear had been stolen. It was in a very inaccesible place hidden in the bush coverd with cammo tarps, South branch Tokomiairo river on private land. I would bee very happy to hear if anyone has heard anything, no questions asked. (Picture of me in my wetsuit black and fluro green with my mates dredge and pics of my dredge before and after painting attached) A reward will be paid to anyone who can provide information that leads to the successful location of this dredge.

Well, that certainly sucks.

#1 suspect would be anyone who was walking nearby with a decent metal detector.

i'd more likely suspect perhaps locals or someone fishing. you'd nearly have to know it was there perhaps by the sound of it.

will keep a look out up this way.

There's no shortage of fuckwits around...plenty of dodgy fellas in that area milton, kai, lawerence etc would b a good place to ask a few questions I wouldn't be surprised if a pig hunter or 2 mite have seen it that would be my guess .

I hear you gingerbreadman - yes I think it would be a pig hunter as I found the content of a pig gut about a week old close by. And access is steep!

It's always a real buggar getting stuff stolen, and dredges are very vulnerable, I had an engine stolen once. Some people are disgusting, thieving swine who think they can just take other peoples hard earned gear.

Maybe we could look at stamping numbers and forum name into our gear? A list on here of stolen engine numbers, metal detector serial numbers too maybe? A member would have a slightly better chance of getting his property back with other members helping to keep an eye out.

Keep a record of engine/detector serial numbers at home, as you never know, the cops might recover it one day, unlikely but not unknown.
Write on your gear with felt pen, then go along the letters/numbers with a small drill, so name is spelled out in holes on boxes etc.

Good luck NUGGY

If its steep and they stumbled accross it maybe it's stashed somewhere else up or down stream ?

i have been thinking over night about this dredge thats gone
there seems such a lot of it with the gear and all i recond that they wouldnt get it all out in one trip so maybe they did stack it up some where i found some of my gear a couple of months latter only the box but the good thing was it was only 200m down stream and it had gold in it so i stole it back

have a good look around the area ask the farmer who he has let on to go hunting were you on good terms with the farmer

i now have 3 dredges with my new 4" keene and it would piss me of if one of mine went missing its alot of money tied up and i found you cant insure them unless you get commercial insurance

got a 5" forsale if you want to replace it lol sorry

commercial insurance will not cover theft as they cannot be secured i have tried many different brokers and no one will do it i know of some that are insured as a moored vessel but have been told by brokers there is no way i would get paid out for theft.
you can however get them insured for getting washed away in a flood, a crash will transporting or if it catches fire etc thats covered under the commercial insurance. only way they will cover theft is if its in a locked shed tehy wont even accept it chained and bolted to tree/boulder.

Theres a bastard born ever minute - that totally sucks and I think the pighunter suggestion may well have hit the nail on the head.

I caught two guys nosing near my place a few days ago and it isnt the first time it has happened - some people also go cruising merely to 'see what they can find' - they hear a rumour or story that someone is dredging a certain area and so they go looking.

Another pointer is that sometimes people join sites like this not to be friendly or comradely but rather to get information to which they can use for nefarious ends.

I would report to the police pronto and also go visit and report to all the local farmers - it looks a fairly large parcel to take out in one hit so it has been removed bit by bit OR hidden close by - take your mates and scour the area - maybe even leave it there if you find it and play a waiting game. If you did find set up security cameras - of course they would claim they had 'found' it and were removing it to take it to the police...you cant win.

Is there vehicle access close by - would anyone see who goes up and down the road? There is a security camera pointed at the road into my place so that every vehicle is recorded.

hi jase
about the dredge: 6.5 hp motor briggs and straton with a 1100lt per min pump and compressurer , 3 / 5"hoses one has got tape over some splits but still works as a spare, 2 have the ends on them , extra wide box as seen on some photos on the forum as well as a spare standard box all depending on type of gold and materials you want to process, all this sits on aliuminum pontoons that are 2.4m long the system was designed to go in fast water and remain stable i can walk around the dredge while in the water 2 seasons old, all fits on and in my defender swb and is able to be loaded and worked by myself.
my partner in the claim and i have both brought 4" keene to keep things even on the recovery and the keene has a longer reach hose for recesses againts the banks the pontoons were made at diverse engineering in westport and able to be broken down i can still manage to get them onto the roof rack with frame all assembled

price : hoping to get round the $6500 replacement would be over $10
