After driving across the bridge passing these guys in the tadmore river me and my wife and 2 kids decided to go back and be nosy what were these guys up to? well that was a year ago now each weekend and some times week days we are off looking for a new adventure. we moved from nelson to blenheim a few months back, yesterday we walked the doom track looking for gold and the day before it was whites bay with the metal dector on the beach. Altho we are new to this we love getting away, we read the forum lots but this is the 1st time we signed up, we have just been playing with the pan but now im moving up a scale and getting a small back pac dredge made any advice please, i was thinkin a folding tray that opens up to about 1500 longwith ripples and carpet ect and a 2 stroke motor small so it can be transported at easy so I can go durring the week into the mountains and play what do you guys think maybe 2inch, We were at butchers flat a few weeks ago and met a couple of guys from picton good fellas and plenty of advice thanks guys if you are reading , We went to cullensville and walked that track some nice sites lots to see, last weekend we went to the other side via blenheim their is a full working claim their diggers and all like the gold rush boys on sky, I have forgotten the name of that place, that was interesting altho we went with the kids and the claim was full of water and nothing happening that day we were being followed by a big stag and it wasnt a tame one full of head wear so that keept us on edge the hole time ,it would not leave us to enjoy some panning and since the kids were their too we decided to leave well thanks for reading were do we go to next ill let you know .jd

hi there jd yes once the bug bites theres no letting go as me and two of my mates (trigger and richie on paydirt)found out lol we have spent countless hours at whites bay and around rarangi also over in nelson one day we went for a detect ending up walking right down the end of the beach ending up finding a nice suprise lol...... ,if you are after gold there is a lot still to be found some days more than others but as they say, "gold is where its found" ,brook(trigger)and i have just started a new little adventure legal gold miners here we come, what type of metal detectors do hirequip hire? a cupple of years ago we walked up to devils creek middle of winter stayed in the cabin up there its worth a look ,it took us about 2 and a half hours with about 30kg packs on our back to get there the cabin has a fire and if you are lucky you might just find some fire wood stashed under the hut to keep you warm ,we went for a pan on the devils creek and waka junction didnt get any gold but great hike tho

we been a few times to cullensville best find up there was a sack about 12inchs deep full of old food tins we googled them and found out they were from the old world war one days they used to have them for rahions was pretty intresting, the gold is real deep around there u might not find any with detector best place to start is bedrock, there is a company doing some drilling for gold over them ways next cupple of years iv heard, to see if its worth mining ,best way to see if your detector picks up gold is take some with you(i have a gram of gold on me in a plastic bag)and put that on the ground you are hunting in set your detector up so it picks it up the best then put some dirt or rocks ect over it and see how deep it picks it up,that way u will know what it sounds like and how deep it will pick it up in the area u are hunting in other wise u could spend a lot of time missing the gold when u could be digging it up and hearing one of the best sounds in the world "clunk" .

there are a few good cheap detectors out there the gold bugs and xterra70/705's are very good and pick up the smallest of gold my old xterra 70 with the 6inch coil on it picked up gold u could hardly see sometimes u could spend hours digging and looking and ending up been smaller than .05 of a gram lol no lies,

once you find your first bit of gold with your detector your away

Hi Jd, welcome to the group. Love to meet up when it suits. I've got a Minelab Quattro detector and I hunt for the gold stuff as well, mainly in Murchison when I visit the in-laws. Goes the same for anyone else in Marlborough, seems to be a few of us now

PM if you are interested.

hay there yea be good for a meet up, we have spent a lot of time wandering the hills yet we always go back to our same spot after every flood there's usually gold in the same area ,going to take the detector out on Saturday and see whats poped up,there's only one creek up the north bank side we have found color in ,my mate (richie) on paydirt and i went miles up the river and found color just with the pan ,rich knows the guy who used to mine the area, got a lot of gold out of there.brook and i have just gone ahead with a claim and set up a nice dredge and a few other goodies getting all ready for summer fun,its starting to turn into an obsession lol a good one at that, i had a chat to a fulla the other day who used to have the claim up the howard he was getting good gold from there till the claim run out,it could be worth a look up there if you got a hole day to go looking its about a hour and half from blenheim just past lake rotoiti
