Hi Jd

From memory, sluice boxes in public fossicking areas are limited to 1 metre in length and 20cm in width. I can't find those dimensions on the web, but from memory those are the dimensions on the signs at the public fossicking areas.

I hope you have given some thought as to where you are going to use your motorised dredge. It would be a shame to go to the effort of making it and not having a place to use it.

It is hard to find the max size dimensions but i know it IS 1 metre length and as gjj109 says, 20cm in width which sounds about right.

From memory the dimensions length=1m max, width=20cm, side height=16cm, don't know why they have a limit on the side height? Most of the gold is caught in the top 30cm of carpet, finding its way further down as it fills up. Any big gold sits at the top tempting you to either leave it there or pick it now and hope it stays in the box. I usually shovel away for a good hour or two and wash the carpet, don't rush the gravel through, let it do it's thing, help the bigger stones through but don't go putting your hands in too much as this can upset the flow and flick up some settled gold, use a small garden hand fork for this and if you have a nice linear flow of water about an inch or so depth it should work fine.

I found it interesting that the max. sluice box sizes were stated on DOC signs, yet could not be found on the crown minerals website, so I called crown minerals, turns out they don't have a max size, it has been imposed by DOC, food for thought!

Probably worth noting that DOC as the manager of the land in which the fossicking area is located can legally impose any restrictions or limitations they choose. Minerals permits providing for public fossicking areas are in essence no different from any other mineral privilege in that the applicant still has to obtain the permission of the landowner and abide by any conditions they impose.

I have an issue with how much land is effectively locked up by DOC and thus unavailable for mining, however I do consider that the fossicking areas need conditions (such as the one you cited) relating to the type and size of equipment to ensure that the experience they offer is preserved - that is Joe Average can take the kids down to the creek with a pan and win a little colour for a modest amount of effort. If it weren't for that every dick head under the sun would be raping the fossicking areas with suction dredges and denying newbies an introduction to the hobby.

If you have issue with the limitations they impose then head off the reservation.

Unfortunately the dickheads have been raping and pillaging the fossicking areas for years.
Mind you, the old timers did pretty good job on the ones around here too, which is why they were assigned to the public in the first place. But I agree it is a shame that future generations will be denied the thrill of yellow fever.
