YES!!!...had a wee hunt around my house this morning before work and pulled out my first ever coin, a 1957 NZ penny. Also...the big one!!!....lifted a Birmingham hallmarked silver cased pocket watch! Date stamped for 1909 (k) and marked Dennison Watch Case Co......bloody brilliant! I'm soooo stoked! Only had my Garrett Gold Stinger for a week and I'm so glad I chose it. I'd add a pic but not sure how from my PC..................and, just worked it out!

I am envious. My place was laid on a bed of nails with a truck load of beer bottle tops spread over the top in celebration. I did find a horse shoe in the field, but that is as exciting as my back yard got (well there may be something still out there but I gave up plowing my lawn to find it).

Yes, well done on the watch. I have found several parts of pocket watches but only one silver back plate, the other parts and two complete ones were base metals. The only gold one I found was in the mangrove swamps below barrys point road, takapuna when I was 15 years old, found knee deep in the mud with my bare foot!

After the first couple of weeks with my Garrett, I think I'm starting to get a little more in tune with it. After playing around with the settings and trying different things, I've gone from getting around 4 inches depth in the first couple of outings, to now finding coins at least 8 inches down. The pic I have added is just a snapshot of a few of my more interesting "firsts" over the two weeks....ie.....first spoon, first silver 925 ring, first buckle....etc.....you get the picture. I've now found about a dozen pennies, heaps of modern decimal, about $20 in spendies, various other bits and pieces and my first silver.........a 1947 half crown. Yup....I'm hooked.........BRING IT ON!!!

I left this a while hoping that someone else would break the bad news to you, but it looks like I'm going to have to.

1946 was the last year NZ had silver in the circulated coins (exception being the 1949 "royal visit" crown). So your 1947 half crown is copper-nickel.

Sorry about that. Don't thump me next time we're on a hunt.

But apart from that, that crown appears to be in very good condition for a buried CuNi coin of that age. Consolation prize.

Thanks for the info Andy...........no, I really mean thank you. I had a feeling things wern't quite as they seemed. First inkling was digging it and not seeing silver. Second was cleaning it and not seeing silver. However, consolation prize accepted with the learning curve attached. Next hunt will yield me some silver........I feels it in me bones!

Finally........my first silver coin! A cute little 1937 three pence. No doubting this one............ It shone back at me from it's earthen tomb. What a buzz. Glad I had my camera with me for the moment!
Shortly afterward, I got my second silver, also a three pence but this one had been hit by a mower so very hard to read a date. Might be 1936 but not sure.............................and yes, now confirmed as a 1936 George V three pence...:)....Thanks Andrew for your dating advise.
Also got a damaged pocket watch key.....nice to find.

If the mower damaged one has a different king than the George VI that's on the 1937, then you know it's pre 1937 and confirmed 0.500 silver :)

Went on my first night hunt with poohbear and a bunch of the other Chch lads, after the Sunday meeting (great to meet you all too). Got quite a few modern decimals but nothing pre decimal. I did however, dig this retro seventies GOLD ring later in the evening after everyone else except poohbear and myself had piked off. The only marking on it is a date (I'm guessing a birthday date) of 31/5/79 and the letters CI. No hallmarks or other identifying info. My second GOLD ring......sorry to piss you off poohbear but as you rightly said...."It makes up for not getting the silvers!" ....aye mate...;)

Yeah..... a pretty cool wee find. It does have a makers name but I'll be buggered if I can make it out. I think I'll try soaking it in olive oil for a couple of days to loosen the excess dirt. If I get a result, I'll post it here.

Nice ring no 8. It is the reward for the time spent. I reckon its about one ring per 100 coins.

Cheers Mike.
