All this gold (other than the bigger piece it was from the arrow) was from the danseys a mixture from both the north and south branches of the Maerewhenua river past the camping site, total is about 1.6 grams from a couple of short trips mucking about which is backing up my fine gold theory for the danseys at this stage (until shown otherwise) it seems to be fine gold only

those bits are a bit bigger than fine tho. i think of fine gold as flour through to maybe pinheads. i think where you are looks like ok gold. just need to find the rest of it next trip.

nice gold for a short trip
about 30 years ago took the kids to the camping ground for a week over christmas i took my slice box etc
borrowed the wheelbrow for the camp and washed the tall grasses on the edge of the bank about 5om up stream from the swiming hole then put the sands in the bottom through the box it was quite rewarding cant recall what i got but was pleased at the time
put my 4" in under the bridge before it climds the hill where the 2 rivers join that also produced nice gold although it was quite deep

it is there maybe worth a detect up round the sluice faces

For those wishing to head further upstream, there is a track leading down to the river from the end of the road, about 100m past the Livingstone cemetery.

You would have to walk, or you could get a motorbike down there, but it's too skinny for a 4wd. And it's a good uphill grunt back to the road.

Had a look on google maps I know where you mean now, ive detected front the bridge up to that 90 degree kink but not up that far to where that path takes you, it was that branch that I had a pan on last weekend.

Image is a bit deceiving but most bits are very small to me (comparing them to big nuggets I see on here)

Dont here or see much of what is found in the danseys, will try do some research to see if they ever got bigger bits from their until I get some time to go some where more promising ill keep panning, detecting and scraping there after all its only a half an hour drive to get their :)

allan dunford &alvey brown could tell you a lot. Mrs brown and her husband had aclaim up german creek in the 1940s. She still lives on the road to danseys ,on the nasbey side. Allan lives in Nasby. I have seen and found good size in there

Thats where my dad goes on a regular basis (he lives in Oamaru).

We normally go across the bridge just past the campground & hit the beach on the opposite side from the road.

As Simon said above, we class "fine" as smaller than pinhead as well ... we get bits bigger than pin head, so I wouldn't say it's fine gold only.

Yet to get bits that you could pick up without tweezers, but pieces that make a "clink" in the bottle are not uncommon.

I'll be back down there over Xmas / New Year.

Anyone wanting to tag along on a day trip with us would be welcome ... just let me know.

Cant have calibrated my scales correctly as it turns out its more like 0.15 of a gram as opposed to the more generous reading of 1.5 grams lol I kept thinking to my self this doesnt seem right and it wasnt FML lol :)

I spent half a day on the Otago side of the Pass a couple of years ago. Just shovelled the top 6 inches of gravel through the sluice box.

I see someone has a claim over the area now.

That someone is Allan Dunford of Naseby!
I try to learn from the mistakes of other's, I haven't got enough time left to make them all myself!

Not Dansey gold but fine gold. the gold in the post is not really fine gold.
love to hit a good streak of that.

the scales I brought this week and though I would try them out. 13.5 grams.
not cleaned down enough yet but close.

Cheers

Hi guys, Yes Dansy's has reasonable size gold. Here is a pic of some gold I got from around Naseby & the Dansy's. The bigger bits were from crevicing up the Dansy's in the upper Kyeburn on the Naseby side. So it is there but like most bigger gold it is on & in the bed rock. So the bed rock is were you got to get to. But yes that stretch now has a claim on it. Getting a bit cool to be playing in the water now. Brrrr

UserPostedImage

Good luck out there.

yes it is getting cold i bought some diving gloves for when i went panning yesterday, last weekend it was dark when i stopped panning yesterday i stopped because my pan was starting to ice up ( see image in twitter link above )

just found more fine gold only about 15 bits I could get out with the tweezers

would love to see or hear of any one finding bigger bits on the camping ground side of the danseys ( where I troll around ) up either branch of the river

I know i can go their and get smaller bits of colour but want to step it up any maybe drive some where a little bit more sizeable pieces are likely

Allan has given me permission to pan in his claim area before but it was in a spot he had dredged and he had pulled a couple of grams from their and i didnt know what i was doing then so i didnt get much.

Had heard of people back in the 70's getting gold up the pig route and I have some spots to maybe try up their, its just a case of do i drive 30mins and go some where I know i can get some gold or drive an hour or so to go prospecting and start the hunt all over again lol...

Guess the blue lake isnt too far from oamaru also so maybe worth doing some homework around their also or more naseby way...

Time to dig out all my gold books.....

streeter:

i haven't been over there but it sure sounds worth a trip.

i find the further upstream you go the bigger the gold generally is. this of course depends on many variables esp the size of the river.

for bigger gold its going to be on the bedrock. you need to get down to bedrock if possible.

look for where some is exposed is a good start. you don't want to dig a hole for a day and not see bedrock so have a good look around first.

broken bedrock is key. while i have found bigger bits on smooth bedrock most gold will be trapped. thus something else to look out for. potential gold traps.

hard to guess what is below the gravels but above water look for bedrock ridges heading to the waters edge. presumable these will continue out of sight in some fashion, and may be catching gold.

i've had the best luck between pools. leading into the pool only some gold has deposited. leading out it is all down low in the loose gravels. and on the steeper gradients the gold seems to fly through so getting a stretch with a gentle fall is good.

i'm of course speaking of my experiences. there are so many variables to it each location can differ but that should be a good start.

been working behind the mother of all rocks at the moment, it has moss growing behind it which has had some colour in it, next trip out im going to dig deeper behind it, getting colour im not finding bed rock but im not down that far yet, the river flows into the side of it so even with a bit of flooding it will have gold dropping behind it, also so it has all the good signs thus far and showing some colour so i think ill have another 1-2 days at least behind/under it before I try a new spot, Mt buster is another place that springs to mind but ill try hit bedrock behind this massive boulder first and see if the colour keeps on showing up the further down i get, ill get some better pics next time im out, last saturday i snapped my trowel in half so that cut down the production line lol... got some new gear coming for my birthday in 10 days so all is good in this prospectors woods :)

Also may look at detecting on the exposed bed rock on the hills in the danseys as most video you see of guys finding nuggets here in nz are not on the river side but on the top of hills have detected in the water table on the side of the road as have heard urban myths of nuggets being found by culvets in the danseys...

some many places to look... not enough time :)
