streeter:

it's amazing sometimes how the gold sticks to the mid stream area. well, all the good bits. i guess it's usually where the best flow is, well, at least in the type of streams i'm in that are good bedrock. there is definitely a pay streak line, just got to find it.

i ground sluiced a stretch over a period and all the best gold was dead centre. and the bedrock was by no means regular. it has rough reef running off sideways on all angles, smooth bed, etc. still the pay streak ran straight thru the middle. i even got some good bits just sitting on the smooth bottom as they were heavy enough only to move further in a very good flood.

Another couple of guys sniped the whole stretch further after me, and what i had missed by me and found by them was also up the centre.

and i've seen this stream in some bloody big floods. it's amazing how the bigger rocks and boulders hold in place in these floods. once moved it's a whole nother story. it's easy to open up an area that's turns out to be a good spot just to have a good flood come along before you can work it fully, and come back and dig late to find squat as you have disturbed the sediments and it's all taken off.

streeter,

mitre 10 has a good sieve in the garden department. it fits perfect in a round bin they also sell. think both are 20 - 25 bucks. they are dark green from memory and the plastic bucket / bin has yellow rope handles. also good for packing all the smaller tools in.
