while detecting yesterday in our local park i dug up this old coin, its a 1674,Charles II, Farthing, its hard to work out how it got here as New Zealand was only discovered by europeans in 1642, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman but he didnt stay long, then in 1769, British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook came to New Zealand,so this coin is 348 years old, anybody have ideas on how to clean it,
thanks

Now that is a find.
You might want to look at leaving that one to the professionals as it would be a shame to damage it.

Really excellent find Skuzzb. Yeah how did it get there?
I would say don't try and clean it at all at least till you determine whether it is rare or valuable.
My guess is both.

I wonder who could advise you? Maybe Te Papa or one of the museums.

What a find. It looks pretty good anyway. I have read that bronze or copper coins are very hard to clean. I myself would not touch it. It is the oldest coin I've heard about found in NZ. I've been placing my finds into acid free protective covers, and into albums. It would protect it from handling damage too. It has huge value in that you found it, and it has a story. Check out these covers. I've bought album pages from the same guy, and slotted them into a three holed ringbinder I bought from the warehose stationary. http://www.trademe.co.nz...isting.aspx?id=449490340

Well done Skuzzb. That truely is an incredible find. Im a wee bit envious but none the less i congradulate you. I would only clean this coin with water as it is such a rare find. Any form of chemical cleaner would surely damage an old copper type coin. Hopefully there is more of them to be found.

Your coin is a real cracker and I think its one of those sorts of treasures which I would never part with. If it was in really good order it would be quite reasonable value - even in 1997 (my catalogue date) in fine condition only it was worth £20 and in Extremely fine condition was worth £175 back then. In other words its a jolly nice coin to have regardless of its condition.

Wow, that is really something! My thoughts would be that it was mixed in with and used with 'modern' farthings. 160 years ago it would have only been 160 years old and might not have been anything special.

I have experimented with cleaning bronze coins which are simmilar to copper and it is basically a waste of time. They have a patina of green crust on them that you can't do much with and if you clean it off you have shinny new pited metal underneath and the coin is ruined. I wouldn't use anything other than soap and water.
