I have experimented with cleaning bronze coins which are simmilar to copper and it is basically a waste of time. They have a patina of green crust on them that you can't do much with and if you clean it off you have shinny new pited metal underneath and the coin is ruined. I wouldn't use anything other than soap and water.
I have learned... that if you tap the green crust gently with something like a plastic brush handle, then the green stuff breaks away nicely. Gently tho, dont use a rock...
And another trick. Drop the coin face down onto a benchtop a few times. Works amazingly well.
