Hi there, My name is Simon and i guess im here for the same reason everyone else is.. The enjoyment of fossicking/detecting for gold and other wonderful objects!
I've been out 3 times so far to 3 different locations and have found the most up the Sherry River, tho be it only a few tiny flakes..

Heres a photo of what i have, macro'd lol (I could only just dream that it was that size lol, biggest piece only being about 2-3mm in length)

Weather permitting i hope to be going up to New Creek up the Howard this weekend for an overnight stay.. Really hoping to find something
this time up there :) and yes, I'm very jealous of all you guys with nuggets, i would be very happy if i could find myself a nugget or a decent
sized flake.. Best keep at it till i do find one :)

I also have borrowed a metal detector from my Grandad (a Gold Bug II) hoping to do some detecting with that also!

Peace out :)

I'd like to have caught up with you this weekend and compared detectors but I got other plans with it being a long weekend. Maybe another time.

I do like the quality of your photo - its excellent - you have just reminded me that I have a professional camera stand with lamps etc - must get it out and try it out...you have inspired me - thanks!

You sure made a wise decision buying that Goldbug - they are just the bees knees

I would hate to think of how much Gold I have got in my life - I gave up weighing it years ago - but my first trip was to Arrowtoen when I was just a wee fella at Prmary School - in a fortnight I didnt even get one flake! Anyone who cant get gold at Arrowtown is a dodo and yet I got none.

You have done well - the road only goes forward and so you will continue to do well and to do better as you gain more knowledge and perfect your techniques and your ability to work out where the gold is likely to be.

I went to the Sherry River when I was up in Motueka a few weeks back but found it really hard to find access. There was just nowhere to get down to it. Bloody frustrating!

Lol, Tell me about it.. Most of the accesses have been over grown with weeds etc.. There is one bridge that you can get down under..
But its VERY public there and its pretty slim pickings! But im not sure what it would be like to go up more around the corner from it during
the summer days when the water is a little more lower! Would be quite interesting actually!

Lammerlaw - Yea, im quite into photography aye! Just waiting for that elusive nugget to photograph then ill be happy!

mineforgold - Im pretty sure its the Gold Bug 2, I will have to check that out actually! The manual that came with it is a little bit vague to say the least and
when it comes to actually setting it up (and not knowing anything about them) it ends up not working right.. I've yet to find anything with it, only stupid rocks with iron in them :( lol

Ok finally got to go up to New Creek up the Howard again.. and WOW.. someone has gone right down the main stream bit with a dredge or something.. they have pretty much cleaned it out..
In the 5-6 hours we were there, We only found like 4 tiny tiny flakes and a few pin sized specks.. We also had the GoldBug 2 up there, and it was finding iron bits of fences etc but not picking up gold.. Is the gold too small ? or could the detector not be set up properly?? Also when something touches the cord going into the coil it would set it off (like the cord is a bit faulty or something ?) like you could just touch it lightly and it would set the detector off :s
In the end i probably had more fun taking photos than actually finding the little gold we did find :( lol

Hi Mystic... Been quite a few reports of dredging up there and DOC have confiscated a couple of dredges-theres a thread on it here somewhere.
As for the Bug if you were finding small bits of iron you would have found gold if it was there-the 2 is incredibly sensitive.Ive got the original Gold Bug and the smallest bit I have found with it is the size of a pinhead, the 2 is supposed to be more sensitve than that!
The trick with the coil lead is to make sure it doesnt move-with it having a metal core even though it is shielded if the lead moves the coil will see it and sound off.Wrap the lead round the shaft and secure it so it cant move-you should have got a couple of velcro straps with the detector but insulation tape will do the job.
Check out youtube-quite a few videos on there about how to set up the Bug 2.Practice makes perfect-chuck a few lead shot around the garden and see if you can find em.
Manual or no manual it takes a LONG time to understand any detector so dont be discouraged if you dont come home with an ounce nugget every time you go out, but you wont find anything if youre not out there doing it. Good on ya for making the effort!

I dont think we actually found any gold with the goldbug2! All of what we got was what we sluiced manually digging here and there lol
Im pretty sure i was doing it semi right, slow sweeps close to the ground etc but what confuses me, is i tried it before i took it anywhere with
the gold I already had.. with no results.. and that was sitting in a plate on top of the ground lol
The gold bug 2 did come with 1 or 2 velcro straps and was wound around the shaft of the detector and velcro in place.. so im not sure that is the problem ? Apparently its all been setup and ready to find gold but im still having no luck, there must be some sort of sacred art to it lol..
Yea ive watched a couple of videos on youtube, but they were mainly finding small to medium sized nuggets and where i go, you wont be finding anything remotely that size :P But as you say, practice makes perfect.. Maybe one day someone from around the Nelson region could help me out with it one day?

Maybe one day we can go out together - and both not find gold ;)
I haven't spent much time in the local rivers yet but I didn't come across anything big enough to set mine off either (apart from lead and wire etc).
However, I am planning to do some more trips now school holidays are over, and I would like to see how our detectors compare.

Maybe your test gold was to small for the detector to pick up..?

Jafa - If thats the case, it wont work in most of the public creeks around Nelson either.. the ones that ive been to only have very fine fine gold
hence maybe thats why it doesnt pick it up, tho you say the gold bug 2 is more sensitive? Hmm

mineforgold - That would be sweet, im sure we could organize something.. I havent used the detector for any other uses yet so could be interesting going to a beach or something?

Hi simon wellcome to the forum...are you sure it is the GB2 you have....the GB has a digital display and the GB2 doesnt..the GB2 is more sensative because it runs at a higher frequency than the GB...the GB runs at 19mhz...the GB2 runs at 72mhz or more.
