Well done Zimbo. There is absolutely no way that dredging in a public fossicking area should be condoned in any way. Thanks for doing what should be done more often.

seeing your pics makes my blood boil. you did the right thing dobbing this guy in.

the guy is obviously extremely lazy. i know that spot. on the arrow river. looks like the guys nearly in the middle of one of the vehicle crossings. it's like he is wanting to be caught. i wonder how many others reported him this day. wondering if the nomad safaris guys did as they go up and down this stretch many times each day. you'd hope so.

i've seen many people with dredges up there. there's claims all over the place so some are legit. over the likes of xmas/new years i often see shiny new keene dredges, obviously rich boys toys that never get any use. one guy i saw once was dredging next to the ford also. he had seen all the black sand at one of the vehicle crossings. funny thing is the whole river is chocker with that bloody stuff. it's just that at the fords the wake from the vehicles washes the sand away exposing large quantities of black sand. all the gold books say look for signs of black sand, well, i guess that's what the guy did. wonder if he found and specks at all.

It is not appropriate to dredge in a public fossicking area, not good sport at all. It not a case of the shoe, but gumboot, and most of us have them on the right way. People dredging these public area's can put the permit in jepoardy, not to mention big holes that you need dive gear to get to the bottom of,

The greenie critic's get things out of perspective all the time so try keep things in perspective here!

If the gold was on the bottom and the hole had to be dredged that deep to get it then a panning fossicker was never going to get it without diving gear anyway!

If you had not actually seen the dredger, would you have known that he had been there? Just a thought.
I try to learn from the mistakes of other's, I haven't got enough time left to make them all myself!

Although this sort of activity is not ideal, you have summed up my thoughts exactly. Dobbing people in will just make DOC annoyed, and what they don't know doesn't hurt them.

My thoughts - I feel sorry for the guy in some respects as there was a time when he could have gone anywhere and had a potter and in the 1960s and 1970s we all did - if we liked a spot we put the dredge into it - people came, people went - they chatted and yarned and never a bad word was said but today is another day so what is the situation and what can be done about it?

Taking out a claim is a bit like lotto for many - their money is hard earned and a dredge is a material possession - its there, its tangible - but the gold isnt! It has to be recovered - but before you get somewhere to use your dredge you need one of two things - a claim which costs money or a friendly farmer who will look the other way and for the latter a little kindness. thoughtfulness and manners goes a long way.

Since coming onto this forum I have learnt many things - their are many members and each his own personality - for good or for bad and times have changed considerably and not for the better but well and truly for the worse.

I have noted probably more than most just how much our rights have been eroded - I say this because generally speaking I am older - Our rights are eroded by subtle so called 'commonsense laws' - you are not allowed to smoke here and there and elsewhere, you cant get on a push bike even without a crash helmet, you have to wear a seat belt - common sense may be but control none the less.

In gold fossicking - you cant go onto private property any more like you could because of farmer liability laws and because we bugger it for ourselves as more and more hoons get vehicles, go out into the country and exhibit bad behaviour which reflects on us all.

We cannot go and buy a good old miners right as I did when I was younger and which gave me access to many places - it disappeared subtley and seemingly over night and in one foul swoop we lost our rights, a mere handful of public fossicking areas came into being - ridiculous, obscebne and an insult.

Hobby miners have to put a strong lobby group into place through meeting in main centres, forming a group with strong spokemen and power behind them - push the fact that New Zealanders are LOSING their rights and get non gold mining people behind us by presenting our hobby as non intrusive, environmentally friendly, a family activity, good for the economy, keeping the gold within the Kiwi arena and so on.

I feel sorry for the gold fossicker with the dredge and yet he shouldnt be there - If he knew how to go about getting a claim and getting a claim was a simple procedure then I have no doubt he would have his own wee spot - legislation is needed to be put into place so that it is easy for a New Zealand citizen to get a claim for dredges 6 inch and under - claim size limit say ten hectares, simple one page forms for Department of Constipation, Land owner or Occupier, Regional Council, and so on - token cost of say twenty dollars per form and claim lease of say $100 per year, declaration and payment of royalty annually with inspection two or three times a year to assess/estimate how much is being found - 3% royalty to crown and finally Public Liability insurance which is cheap compared with the potential.

The fact is that it is hard for a bloke who isnt in the know to get a claim and its made harder by the costs and red tape - yessir I feel sorry for the guy even if he is in the wrong.

Me? - I never was into dobbing people in - I might tell them to put an egg in their boot and beat it but I never squeaked or narked on a person yet and dont intend starting. The closest I would ever go is to get the police to serve a trespass notice on anyone found on my own property which I keep for myself and friends

Very well summed up Lammerlaw.
I don't think that he should be there, but taking regos and going straight to DOC is not the way that I personally would go about it.
Maybe a "How's it going?" Have a yarn to them, be polite, then say "mate you are not really supposed to be here, I won't spoil your day for you, but if you are back here again I will be giving DOC a bell as dredging doesn't give us guys with sluices a fair crack"
If you are up front with people, as you fellas know, most gold prospectors (whether armed with pans, sluices, dredges or divining rods) are good guys, and should be treated as such.....
Just my two cents worth.
Cheers

Speaking of black sand - any one have any tips on running a bucket sluice concentrator , I have one but I find it just clogs up with black sand? Very frustrating . Any ideas or other methods of getting rid of the black sand

the poor guy could loose his equipment for sucking a tiny hole in the ground to see whats down there

of course I would know he had been there I would have fallen in a bloody big hole cleaned down to bedrock, gold is usually on the bottom last time I looked, in perspective I would say it is not appropriate to dredge in hand tool only ares,

Mind you, I would not mind a few dredge holes in the Gabriels gully fossicking area ,and it should be extended, the colour is only now starting to show there after digging a bloody big hole

Look into the blue bowl, I think that is its name, mabey others know more about it, seen it work well with very fine gold from beaumont, cleaned out the sand really fast, but the problem was that there was so much mercury around that it amalgamated at the end.

I just got in one of allan trees funnel feeders will be testing it out in about a weeks time will let you know how it goes. all i have used up till now has been a small clean up sluice 600mm long 100mm wide with small expanded metal and minners moss just hook up to garden hose and spoon away. still slow but works takes about an hour to go through a 5" dredge concentrates.
im hoping the funnel feeder will be alot better as apparently you can just fill it up and leave it for a while and just top it up everynow and then.
and unless you only have about 2 cups of black sand to deal with stay away from blue bowls these are the most tedious time consuming heaps of S**T a 10L bucket of 30-50 mesh will take the good part of 4 hours take it from me ive learned the hard way if you want one ill sell you mine.

Would you say it was appropriate for all the people with hand tools to be working away in areas outside the designated areas and on other peoples claims??? i bet alot of fossickers would think that was still alrite but in reallity they are just as bad as that poor dredger!!

As far as I am concerned in this country all is fair in fossicking and freedom as we are the citizens and by right it is OUR country regardless of what the criminals who call themselves politicians say as they dance to the tune of the international bankers as I have said time and time again.

YOU and I should have the right to fossick in any State owned land unless it is claimed - using hand tools only but with regulations in place so that any citizen can get themselves a small scale claim with a minimum of fuss and bother with, as I said above, simple stock forms and agreements where need be with the Departments and organisations as appropriate - DOC, Land owners etc.

But you and I also know that in this corrupt regime its the big huge mining conglomerations who get the permission AND who gets the gold? We dont - its our gold, the Government doesnt - remember that it is our gold - it goes off shore to the International bankers (Macraes gold to Rothschilds I understand) - and who holds the 'mortgage? - the international bankers! Hello theres something wrong here...but we are all good at talking and nothing gets done as we get stomped on and our rights are further eroded.
