Interesting - Once upon a time the West Coast was a grand place to be and I never once met a person I didnt like - it was with sadness that I took my family to see some of my old haunts up the Grey Valley and noted the changes in the place - not one of them for the better - I found the pub at Totara Flat closed - the native trees on Granville Terrace replaced by Exotics - but the second worse part was th small areas where it was clearly evident that cars had been burnt out up on the Terrace where it was now Pine plantation, the remains of one burnt out car, yet to be removed - and finally the worst part of all was the nasty looking piece who shadowed us in his car, stopping a hundred metres behind when we stopped and when I got out and walked into the bush to see for signs of old gold workings he got out of his car to follow.

I wonder if this chap found something he wasnt supposed to have found? Following my experience and also the experience of a friend who owned land over there I would not be surprised.

Yes, that's a possibility. He went missing in January so could have stumbled onto someones plantation or some other illegal activity. Who knows. You would have to be careful wondering through the bush over there in case you walked onto an old mine shaft that was overgrown. Fall in and the overgrowth springs back in place so noone can see or find you again. Horrible way to go.
Did you speak to the shadowy fella Graham? Wonder what he was up to?

i've only just spotted these articles.

i wonder what happened to the guy?

most likely he fell in a shaft or otherwise got injured.

which is why i'm wondering why his family seem so convinced he's been murdered.

perhaps they know more than they are letting on?

maybe threatened by someone growing something else that's exotic?

if the guy was dredging surely his gear wound be around and the river searched? was there any rain before he disappeared to swell the river?

if he fled why leave your hard earned gold behind?

it would also be a hard call to flee and not contact your family.

all seems highly suspicious.

i remember a thread i read from a guy on an australian forum who said he now doesn't go detecting at a certain time of year to to previously stumbling onto a crop, followed by a bullet whizzing by his head.

Makes sense - I was shadowed as I said in an earlier post at Granville Forest, Totara Flat - that was close to harvest time - Easter about five or six years ago. I also came across some dubious looking interbred cretins on two other Easter trips at Big River near Reefton

Ever heard of terrorism? - I see red when people threaten me like that - Do unto others before they do unto you? If someone threatens you then you have several recourse of action - go to the police - trash like that do NOT like adverse publicity - they cannot afford to have the police visiting them. The police also take a dim view of trash who threaten others with a firearm - its bye bye firearm.

The second option is to shadow them home - find out where they live - trash their property - they have no idea where, who or why but the latter they guess! They usually blame some others scum sucker in the drug line! As the police in Chicago said encourage the crims to cull each other out - it save us the trouble and also improves the breed!

The other option is to take their photo on your cell phone then go out and phone the police and lay a complaint right there and then - explain where you are and describe the low life - let the police come and sort them out right there and then.

It is more serious than you think as I do know of a nasty instant on the West Coast up Buller way but shant relate it here.

Another option is to discuss it with the police and maybe set the trash up - if I wanted to go somewhere then I daresay I would do it but I might consider carefully my plan of action to make sure that if I am shadowed I hold the whip hand...always ways and means.

But it does pay to find out everything you can about the person who threatens you - name, car, rego number, address - everything. If need be wait outside hotel and shadow him home to find out where he lives or merely wait outside to find what vehicle he goes to and get the registration number and it all fits into place once you have it.

There are some nasty and really stupid people around. In my previous incarnation, I used to do search and rescue flying around in Air Force helicopters. Electric Puha plantations stand out like the proverbial among the pine trees and other growth. A quick radio call to the boys in blue and pluck, they disappear. The cops often leave a calling card at the locations they clear and one day the police were doing a search and found a car on a back country road nestled in the bush, went to check on it and there was one of their cards sitting on the front seat. So they waited and sure enough this guy comes out of the bush holding his "gardening" equipment. Quite a decent plantation by all accounts. What a thicky

I note that many of these slime balls booby trap their plantations - I rather like the idea that if a person does find a plantation and it does have booby traps then to simply relocate the traps so that those who set them also set them off!

I have come across small plots in the bush but in all cases there were no booby traps but I had heard of them in the North Island - I dont know what it is like on the Coast though...nice idea to see those who set traps for others get caught by their own devices.

Me and my brother grewup on a dead end road that had bush on boath side,s and a river at the end of it one day when we finished our swim this old squear yellow cortina with a fat maori fella init and some other dood driving it went parst us slowly then turned around and followed us up the road then stop,d we kept on walking around the couner and i look,d back to see the fat fella pulling out a gun and then fireing it into the air....bit harsh i thought considering i was only 10 and my brother 8 even year,s later our naebour had letters poked into his mail box telling him if he harvisted his maze they would burn his house down they didnt do that but they did wreck his tractor.....
after that we used to find weed all over the show.....even at school!
that was over 20 years ago so i can only imagine what,s going on these day,s in the bush with even more nutters around.
