I was introduced to the art of detectoring by 1864hatter and from his storys of the gold he was finding I bought a Fisher gold bug. I have been gold hunting with hatter once at Lammerlaws place (you may remember me Graham) and once at a spot hatter knows of in central otago and both times have aquired a pleasing amount of gold which payed off the detector with a bit to spare. Ive got just less than 3 weeks left of my uni holidays and will be in the hills for as much of that time as possible. Ill be sure to post any decent findings.

I think the spot you went to with Matt was possibly David's spot which he had told Matt about. I have a friend from many years ago who I understand had a claim not so far from there though whether he has now or not I am unsure. Good luck with the detecting - its a learning curve for me as it is not my traditional form of mining but recently I have got a bit with the Goldbug - my Minelab got swept away in a flood when the stream went from a trickle to 4.5 cumecs in 5 seconds - David got it back but a Belgium tourist we had with us lost his new camera and other assorted gear.

Wow dose it still run? I can't say I have ever experienced a flash flood of any magnitude before but it is something that is always in the back of my mind esspecially when working in the gorgy parts of rivers.

Hey Graham and Marshall, Greetings from Vietnam, Just thought I'd correct Lammerlaw on something so people dont think im into poaching peoples spots. The spot I took Marshall to was around 20 km from where David told me he had found gold and furthermore I got gold there in 5 streams none of which anyone had ever mentioned to me. Just thought I'd clarify that. Shame about your detector Lammerlaw, i have drowned mine once but luckily it still works....

Havent you seen the rock shelter you guys slept in on Google Earth - have a look. ...now lets see - what do I want brought back from Vietnam...other than an AK47 ...and you wouldnt want to be up at my place - snow on the ground this morning up there and right now its colder than charity in an opium den...I am heading up tomorrow as theres others up there right now. How's Nam? Got food poisoning yet? I got 0.85gram the other day but spent ~$120 on fuel to get there so that was a bit counter productive. Sam and I havent been able to hit the hills together yet but he got 11.7grams the other day and said most of it came from one crevice!

I know exactly where it is and i know here david was and the two locations are nowhere near eachother. Hard to believe its that cold where you are considering its summer but thats the High country I guess. I dont think customs would let me bring back an AK 47 for you, you can however fire and Ak 47 over here for a dollar a round, its part of a tour through the old North Vietnamese tunnels. Over and out

Over and out Hi Matt - I asked David and he said it was a fair way from his spot so all good - yes I knew about Vietnam and being able to fire an AK47 - A cobber of mine is not long back and where he was you can shoot a magazine for fifteen dollars...he also saw a booby trap - A hole in the ground covered over with revolving drums with spikes protruding so if you fall in the more you struggled the more the drums revolved and skewered you...charming Im sure. The Garrett is an Ace pro or something like that but today I found a nice nugget and got Davind to try the Goldbug over it and it seemed to perform better than the Garrett...so maybe I will stick with the Goldbug. Hope your enjoing it over there - Maybe one day I will go have a look...unless I wake up dead first.

Nice one finding the nugget, you seem to be having a good it of luck lately. ye a its good over here were just about to go look at the ruins of My Son and marble mountain. Then were off to Hue tonight. I'll be back on the 7th Feb so get the gold before i get back haha.
