do you guys know if there is still any gold in the stream/river that runs through Thompsons gorge in tarras?. i know that there used to be a mining operation there back in the day but do you still think there would be any gold?
the stream certainly looks good with crevices underwater etc but i was wondering if there was any expert knowledge?
thanks

Firstly I have not worked there myself but I have no reason to believe that there is no gold there - I believe there were workings there in the good old days. There was some great gold found in Camp Creek in the Lindis - I know that one of the Landowners there is so far up his own arse he is likely to be quite nasty if he should come across you - so far up his own arse in fact that if you argue with him he will turn inside out like a demented Octopus and that will solve the problem.
'
There are spots alongside the main road on the lindis where you can easily get a quarter ounce per day with a small sluice box - there is a lot of fine gold there - I hopped into the river there one day a while ago and in a very short time got 7 penny weight or 10.5 grammes...that was with a glass bottom box, s bent screwdriver scratcher, a drag hoe from the garden and a snifter with my pan to clean up after wards....and of course a bottle to put it in!

If you are referring to the Thompsons gorge that runs from Matakanui thru to Bendigo station then yes there is good gold in that creek.and in some of the side creeks. I dredged thru there about 15 years ago and did quite well. up past the cattle yards and the stone hut there is some good gold to be found if you have a scratch around. quite a bit of the gold we dredged up there had bits of quartz stuck to it.
Would imagine that it would be well worth a crack with a MD up there too.
Extensive workings all thru the gorge.

Its a public road through Thompsons (dry weather), there are about 12 gates to open, so take a passenger!!!There are 4 or 5 different owners or leasees of the land through the gorge. On the Tarras side i believe it is all bendigo Station. once you get over the summit and drop into where the cattle yards and stone hut is and out to Matakanui i believe there are more than one landowner
