Hey guys, this is my first post here so go gentile :P
Anyway I was just reading this forum about that Gold Rush Alaska show. Anyhow one of the guys in the forum was saying you can buy pay dirt concentrates from ebay and pan them yourself... So I checked and you can.

Being curious I went over to trade me to check if there were any similar on trade me but there is not. I'm wondering if anyone on here knows of something like this in nz? where someone how has a claim sells of some of his/her pay dirt concentrates? as I would be interested in purchasing some to practice panning for gold..

anyway thats about it.. lol look forward to talking some more.

Hi, welcome, a good way to practice is with led shot in your pan.

Hi and welcome to the madhouse!

I've not heard of anyone doing this here.I know you cant import bags of dirt from overseas for obvious reasons but it sounds like a good idea for someone with a claim to do...

As for practicing panning just spray some bird shot gold, throw it in a pan of gravel and away you go!

Just remember how many you put in there... :-)

Hi overdog, thanks for the reply :)

Yep I think it would be a great idea for someone with a claim to sell their pay dirt/concentrate on trade me or on here..

With regards to people importing this stuff wouldn't there be a problem with customs / boarder security etc? if so have you heard of anyone trying this?
I'm thinking of just giving it ago and seeing what happens if so I'll document the process on here :)

Thanks for the suggestion with the bird shot might give that ago soon also.. but being that I never get out to actually go panning etc it would be cool to pan some actual gold till I get some time to convince some mates to go panning with me lol :)

I have just done some reading on the mac website here
Sounds like its possible more so with gravel/sand so long as it has nothing growing/living in it other wise it has to be treated..

What LepreSean has told you is an excellent idea - partly for two reasons - it is heavy like gold but also being round you have to be careful when you get to the end of the panning that it doesnt roll too far - it makes you a little more cautious.
Although others will not recommend it I think it is good to practice with the older type pans before you go onto the modern Garret pans or similar with their raised ribs. These pans are superb and make for rapid panning with the loss of little gold if any but by making it hard for yourself you also develop well honed skills.

To get the practice you can also get half a dozen flakes of genuine gold and placing say twelve into a pan you can then pan them into a basin and then recycle out of the basin into the pan and keep practising this until you get twelve out of twelve every time and then once yo do that practice timing yourself so that 12 out of 12 in five minutes becomes 12 out of 12 in a minute!

hi webznz. i reckon ya got the right idea.panning gold is alot cooler look than panning lead shot.save that for the ducks. i have family down at the moment returning to auck about the 13th and i could send a litre of sands with a decent amount of gold flakes in it to mix with some gravel to fill ya pan to play with. wot ya reckon?

On a serious note I would be really great full if you would like to do this :)
