Very interesting but not Ashburton itself but rather the ranges of hills or rather mountains away in beyond the plains toward Alford judging by the article. I really dont know if there was or there wasnt gold found there but nothing would surprise me despite the geology of the land toward Alford and away in behind Mt Somers etc.

I love that country for its gemstones and petrified wood.

It was said many years ago that a horse and cart came into Waimate township from Hunter and either lodged between the hoof and shoe of the horse or somehow jammed in a gap between the iron tyre and wooden wheel rim of the cart or wagon there was a gold nugget - no one could ever account for it but it was naturally assumed to have become jammed there out at Hunter but no one ever did find the source.

Do you know of any other references relating to gold discoveries in the area? It would be interesting to read them as well. I cannot find any references to gold in any of my historic records or in any of the mining reports I have though I havent got them all by any means but that doest mean that there are no other references pertaining to gold in the area.

It is pretty rugged country in behind there and much of it is not frequented too often with the exception of Musterers and hunters and trampers though they tend to keep to known tracks and routes. My son spent some time in there one winter and by all accounts some of that country is pretty rugged.

Interesting.

Maybe a land owner up that way got hold of the quartz elsewhere hoping a fake rush would bring him some extra income for a while.

I think the days of such adventures are now getting past sadly if todays episode is anything to go by as I was out gold mining but all I picked up was a couple of small nuggets and a porcelain Confuscius that I may have mentioned in another thread which someone blasted to purgatory on my place and left the pieces there! My son gets more gold nowadays! All I managed to do was stuff up the hose on my gold dredger and had to cut it, wrecked the hose clips, hose kept coming off, petrol tank turn off knob leaks like a sump, pull start comes out but doesnt go back in, Arthritis or rheumatism gave me the agonies, wandered of away down the creek with top off and shorts on and the blasted sun got clouded over so I got chilly, I bust the drag hoe I had with me and son was late down the creek so I got worried - such was my beginning to this gold mining season.

Now if it came from the back of Ross I would be surprised as I have a hunk of rock from the Mikonui just south of Ross which has what appears to be gold in it but since I last came back from there I havent really got around to finding out.
