This page

http://www.silvercoinsto...land-silver-coin-values/

appears to indicate that silver half crowns were only produced in 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1940.

Does that mean no coins were produced in other years, or that the ones produced didn't have silver content?

An auction on TM for a "scarce" 1944 half crown makes me wonder.

Half Crowns were not minted in 1936, 1938 and 1939.
In 1944 there were only 140,000 minted which probably would
make them a bit scarce by now.

It would be interesting to know how many silver coins were not returned
when pre decimal was withdrawn.

I believe there were 180,000 half crowns minted in 1944 (New Zealand Coins, Banknotes and Tokens' - By Anthony W. Grant) All 1946 and earlier were 50% silver. The lowest minting was the 1940 Centennial (100,800 minted) but ironically enough they are the most common in this household as I have around eight uncirculated.

It would indeed be interesting to know how many silver half crowns are still out there as many went to scrap back when Hunts pushed the silver price up to 20 times face value back in the 1980s

Your quite right Lammerlaw it was 180,000 in 1944. I keyed the wrong figure.

I assume the 1940 coin was a special design for the Centennial?
If so can you show us a pic please.

Chris.
