About the 1080 thing. My brother-in-law, a pig hunter from way back, has managed to get up and runing a scheme where many of the pig hunters in the area are working with DOC [usually in opposing corners] to get their dogs branded and "kiwi trained". The idea is that if DOC comes to recognize the culling that hunters do with pigs [well with possums really] then less 1080 will be used. If this Coromandel chapter is successful, the scheme could end up spreading throughout the country... to the benefit of all. The day I left his farm to head south they were about to brand 200 odd dogs. All relatively humane, they shave a patch then use something like frozen nitrogen.

how did this thread get onto the 1080 thing, anyway 1080 is eco terrorism, in the future doc will prosectuted and held accountable for the use of such a devastating weapon. if you want to get rid of a pest no matter what it is, put a reasonable bounty on its head, make it worth someones time and pay anyone who wants to erradicate it. i mean how many possums would be living if they payed say $5 a tail. dont get me started on the forestry industry!

Yes, I've actually heard it's poaching if you go shooting pests on DoC land without getting a permit - couldn't believe it when I heard that!

lol would you believe that unless you have you have access arrangments (permit) from doc your not supposed to be mineing down the river, creek eather and that includes hobby stuff sluceing, panning etc...and thats were things can get tricky as a lot of the time doc doesnt no what is or isnt there land..."how stupid is that" so you have to get it surveyd...else you mite get done for poaching..!!

with the price of possum fur at $145 kg and it taking 15 possums per kg witch works out at $9.66 a possum its surprising theres a need for 1080.

Its an interesting topic - most of the old hands 'farmed them' in other words who wants to wipe out the goose that lays Golden Eggs - DOC want them wiped out hence the evils of 1080 - the worlds bankers want everything wiped out and in my opinion the reason why DOC do not succumb to public opinion and stop its use - DOC are merely another Department who serve their masters well...the politicians call the tune at the end of the day and the tune they call is the one they are told to call by the 'receivers'

In any case IF the country was run by good old Kiwis FOR good old Kiwis we would have young people out in the bush, training them in outdoor skills, showing them a great way of life and easing the financial burden on this country trapping and plucking Opossum fur. I think there is a good industry in fur fibres and skins - tourists do go gaa gaa over skins and fur products. Here in New Zealand we are unique in that these critturs are not endanged - they all breed like rabbits - including the rabbits - and they all have economic value and yet DOC go around murdering everything with 1080 - Opossums - wekas - Deer - Kea - rabbits - Kiwi...it just does not make sense unless theres an ulterior motive.

What's the possum population like on your land Graeme?

Take on a bunch of youngun's and set up a hunting collective. You teach them how to live on/off the land and hunt, they share in the fur profits and do a mandatory 2 hours per day gorse spraying for room and board? Get 'em off the dole and away from the ps3/xbox.

It is a great idea but when it comes to making ideas work I am about as useless as using a bucket of petrol to extinguish a fire or a refrigerator at the North Pole!

The Animal Health Authority have nearly skittled the Opossums on my place and they are few and far between now. What you suggest is something that the Charitable Trust I once managed...well sort of managed...once came up with as an employment initiative so it certainly has its merits...but as I said above but in different words - I couldnt organise a booze up in a brewery...in other words more or less useless at doing today what can be done tomorrow and when tomorrow comes its too late!

Are you having a "grump" day today??

I agree that until someone finds a replacement for 1080...... Is it 90% of kiwis get killed by predators and kiwis are making a comeback in areas that have been smacked with 1080 over an extended period of time?

hey its raining and i cant work im a contractor only get paid when i work

do you like the rats in the bush? how about the stoats?
1080 will kill most oppossums and heaps of rats stoats then have little to eat since the rats are gone their main food supply
so they die also
at the pesent point in time there is on the ground on the back blocks of the heaphy track a new poison on trail so it will be awhile before if it works and will be allowed to be dropped

i have seen the results of 1080 it works dosnt mean im for dropping it from the air but we dont have any other solution to the control of the tb in this country i was up behind charleston on darkies terrace controling come for a walk with me i will show you the tomos , deep water races, shafts, limestone caves, cliffs etc all of them are covered now with gorse and fern the other day took me 6 hours to cover 1.2km (perhaps im old and slow) but i have to cut my way through this stuff to get the traps out
but i enjoy my work and wouldnt go back to being a desk jockey

all you hear about 1080 in water supplies etc is from stories that have been around for years yes dogs die from eating infested oppossums but there are signs up to say keep your dogs out of the areas all 1080 sowing now is done with gps
control and at any time coordinates can be sorted out to prove either way where its been laided there are large buffer zones around private lands etc

Methinks I know you well enough Keith not to ask who the hell you think you are! Hmmm - if you were over here I would give you a 20l bucket of bait pellets...sache things with probably, maybe, perhaps peanut bait pellets in them. Some contractor left them in my shed a year or three ago and they aint much use to me - I like gettign Opossums while they are still hot...a bit like women...hot!...after all they are easier to pl..uck

I trapped Opossums for years and had them well and truly under control on my place as I wanted to zonk them in totality but I used a barrage of Rabbit Traps - I still got fifty or so...somewhere including an Australian one and it makes the Ace Lane look like a two year old tiny tots playpen toy as it has one plain jaw but the other has sharp serated teeth like a comb.

I went to a course on 1080 a while ago and had to make a recommendation on it and voted for its use based on the information we were given and I also do realise that birds and so on do get killed but there has to be an equilibrium in a country which is 'gvdlne' - in fact the CDs on its use and the recommendations we had to make are sitting here beside me - In this country which is 'gvdlne' nature will one day take over from man and create its own equilibrium and I have no doubt that many native species will disappear and other species will dominate. Personally I wish I could allow the wilding pines to grow as they sure in hell are better than gorse...or better still larches and firs.

Perhaps we could ban 12g shotgun shells due to the fact that a DOC employee blew a Takahe over...by mistake of course!

As for rats and stoats - they are bad news - an interesting observation I made in the late 80s on my place - for the first month I averaged 14 Opossums per week and one stoat and threw the carcasses into the gorse - after five or so months I was down to one Opossum per week and fourteen stoats per week - the exact opposite...I guess the smell of the Opossum carcasses drew them in from afar...two friends of mine years ago loved trapping them and skinning them - they tanned them and the skins turned out very well indeed. Native birds on my place once were more or less extinct with the exception of the native Falcon.

I never was much good at skinning them and as for fur - there is or was a huge bag in the shed and if I am correct it is probably weevil riddled now...such as life...never do today what you can do tomorrow and when tomorrow finally comes its too late!

Actually the last Opossum I got was one which came running out of a shed I own - I was just in time to scone it stone dead, deceased, killed with a large piece of four by two - pl...ucked it, went to the truck to get a bag and when I came back the fur was there but the Opossum was not - is a naked Opossum called pornographic?

Well Keith I can only say that if my wife was as nice looking as caz I would have her picture on here as well - nice lady. I married the female version of Uncle Scrooge and she thought that when we got married I would change my lifestyle to suit hers - it dont happen like that...the closest thing she has ever done to skinning an Opossum is to take the shell off a cackleberry to put in a salad...and after a couple of seasons out gold mining she refused to come any more...they are hard to come by these good keen women - I always dreamt of the outdoor lifestyle lady but probably more the hippy type one, conservationist type and yet not a tree hugger, a sort of loner who likes to see over the next hill, someone who likes wandering - though to be fair to her she did come on my last weekend trip to Warbirds over Wanaka but it seemed to be the fact that after the show I ended up away up the Buller nearly a fortnight later and we didnt get home for two weeks...and all that time she had to sleep on the ground.

She has made a few con...bugger...whatever the word is...over the years as she doesnt go mad anymore when I come in and put piles of dead ducks on the kitchen floor or cut up the odd pig on the picnic table out the back or maybe she just gave up in disgust.
