Hello to all.
I'm an ex Cantab (Go the Red and Blacks!), now living in Richmond (Nelson).
Just bought a new Garrett Ace Pro (the new model). Came with a nice wee stack of goodies (Garrett pan, detectorists pack, retrieval tool...sort of like a small pick-axe 'thingy', a couple of nice books, etc).
Looking to get back into gold panning/sluicing and a bit of 'detectoring' (if that's a real word?).
At 64 I'm probably not into 2 day hikes into some 'secret' place anymore, but would be happy to meet up with any one in this area
for a wee prospect, or 'detector day' somewhere.
Great forum. Only found you a short while ago.
Cheers.

Gidday KGBee. You are in close proximity to some pretty good areas for gold fossicking and they aren't too far off the beaten track either. Check out the Locations page and there are a few areas described. There are a few books around as well, some are also in the forums.

I'm in Blenheim so the main area I scratch around in is Murchison. Whenever my wife thinks it's time to see her mum, we pack up the car and off we go. I'm never going to grow rich but it is fun. I own a Minelab Quattro and I have an old Sovereign as well. Lean pickings in Blenheim so far but I'm finally getting my head around the Quattro. Lots of practice, set up a test garden so that you can see how your detector reacts to different targets.

The guys are pretty good on here with quite a few "old sages" with lots of experience. Tap into them

Have fun

Hi Kelvin.

I am putting together a "hands on" display for the Tapawera A&P show so I guess I will have to get out and find a few nuggets for the show and tell portion of that. If you have some spare time and want to poke about over the next month or so.

Dean.

Hi KGBee - hope you like it up there - its a great area - you will be able to go up the Roden River to explore maybe, walk into the site of the Champion mine. At your age, being close to mine I would have asked you to have met up with a view to going to look for a bit of gold had you moved down thisaway rather than thataway. I dont know if you are into rocks and minerals generally but they have some keen people up there and when I was up there last I saw a heap of places I thought might have been worth working over with a metal detector, more for money, lost items and so on so happy hunting and good luck.

Thanks people. It's a very welcoming community here.
Very pleasant, think I'll stay awhile!
Hey Dean, you just recently sold me my new California sluice box (I'm in Harriet Court).
Yep, wouldn't mind a wee trip 'detectoring'.
5441344 will get me (any other forum member most welcome to contact me too).
Thanks Lammerlaw, I've been up through the Dun Mountain area so far (just for a walk).
My Great Grand-Dad used to be a miner in Cromwell/Clutha area.
He had a lovely pocket watch 'chain' that he plaited from horse hair.
Every couple of inches he attached a gold nugget!!!
My Mum had it, but GAVE IT AWAY when I was still young (about 50 years ago).
My brother was given the watch, but allowed his kids to 'play' with it. Totally shagged it. Cost him near $1900 to have it restored years later.
Muggins here got nowt.
Should mention maybe that the machine I bought is the new Garrett Ace Gold.
Seems to be a wee beaut. Will 'show and tell' any finds that might interest the forum members.
