A big hello and welcome from the deep south - what were you after in the gorge - it seems like an interesting place - I assume that if you were after quarts then there must be a lot of cow milking done there or an oil well but if it was quartz then I guess its gold, galena and other minerals - lucky living up there as it has always been my dream to come up there pillaging...Oops I mean for a look see.

Well young fella your a quarter of my age and thats a real bugger - for me that is - but none the less it is good that a young guy is keen on getting out into the outdoors - you are in a great area for a number of different minerals so dont be one eyed and concentrate on gold only - learn all you can about the geology of your area and then collect the different mineral specimens that your locality offers - lots of good things up your way and there have been many occasions when I have been jealous that I am not up there - was always going to do a pillaging pilgrimage up there but never got there - actually I set out on a big OE once but only got as far as Rotorua and turned around and came home.

when you say lots of good things up my way what are you referring to? i have only ever found quartz with specs of fools gold ,where would you go if you were up here ? from my understanding the karangahake gorge is the wrong place for panning and detecting as the gold is very fine and that is why cyanide was used to separate it ?,Ive already got 10 odd kilo of rock under my bed and in the garden from around the place but finding some actual sign would be nice for a change :) thanks
