Any recommendations for good October holiday locations where the family can keep themselves entertained while I bugger off to a fossicking area or beach? :)

dansy's pass holiday park...there is a swimming hole for the wife and kids as well as a good play area...and you dont have to wonder off to go fossicing..you just go down to the river with a pan...and if you dont have one they have some there...and you have a choice of weather you want one of there cabins which are a good size for the family..or down on the lower part closer to the river and the gold you can pitch a tent..lol...or if you have a camper you can take that down on the lower part as well.

yea iagree with dansey pass i used to take the family there when they were younger plenty of things to play on for the kids but no shops for mum
there used to be gold in the long grasses on the true left bank 50 to100m up stream from the swimming hole take a large bucket and wash the grass then put the wash through the box
got good colour there

The kids would love it, but she-who-wears-the-pants would require a motel unit with it's own bathroom and kitchen facilities.

I agree - Dansy's Pass is an excellent choice. My missus enjoyed being there while I had a play. Nice open country for walks too.

There are cabins at the campground but also a fully furnished A frame house with all facilities.

When you say plenty i think you mean numerous induvidual specks/flakes not so much weight? But you are right about it being a nice place. I went there on a geology trip for a few days and it was great. If you are into fossils then Danseys pass has more than you can carry.... I also had no trouble at all in finding gold but it was a bit on the small side for my tastes, maybe i just went in too hammerd a spot. well worth a look though
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

yup thats what i mean..plenty of specks/flakes..no weight to them unless you get lots..lol...but for someone that is just looking for a place to take the family and still get a bit of color then dansey's is good..lol..it is small for my taste to but at the moment until i can get to where the bigger stuff is the small stuff will do..i dont even get there as much as i use to when i lived in oamaru..but i love camping there..

The other place that i can not recommend strongly enough is Pinedale motor camp up in Marlborough, I think if i had a choice i would live up there. Plus the gold is bigger....

There's no "maybe" about it. :)

Stayed at Dansey's Pass for 4 days. Lots of fun. Took the pan but never used it! Did some wandering around with a GPX4000 but only found old rusty nails. Need to get away without the anklebiters and handbrake to get any decent hunting done.

Off to Murchison for the long weekend. Yay. First time back since last Xmas and that was during the big rains and the rivers were huge. All my gear is ready to be loaded into the car. Have to leave room for the family to put their bags in I suppose, and their scooters. Leave the detector at home but all my crevicing, pan, bucket and insect repellant is ready to go. Already have a sluice box in the mother in law's shed. Hope the rivers are down. I can hardly wait.
