Hi All

I see on a NZ Gold Facebook Page, I am on. That the rot has started. The guy just got a Mining (Dredging Permit) granted. He has now received a communication from Worksafe NZ that he needs A " COC" before he can start any work on his claim. Google Worksafe NZ "coc" ,bloody hell, more rigmarole to go through. Oh and a "COC" will cost you $140.00. And I guess you will have to renew it yearly. That is of course if you manage to get one. So now, its watch out for the Gold Police, and now I guess the Worksafe NZ Police. Guess the fine for working without a "COC" will be up around $250000. Frih, what next.

Cheers Trev aka " The Hatter"

appropriate name for a certificate from worksafe seeing as most of their rules are made up by cocks.

Hi All

Yep read that Element. Didn't take em long to get into action did it. I should imagine that every Permit Holder will be getting a little letter or email from them too. And something has just occurred to me. What does underwater dredging entail. Why Diving of course. You can bet your bottom dollar that Worksafe will get onto that one poste haste. And anyone with a dredging permit, will be required to undergo a "PADI" course. I can actually see that occurring. I also envisage that they will put in place, "Stop Work" notices on all Mining permits until their requirements and dictatorial obligations are fulfilled by the Permit Holder. It looks the good ole Kiwi days, of just go do it are gone. What a bugger. More money out to operate a Hobby Claim. Damm glad I surrendered my ones some years ago, and became a renegade. Its just so much easier.

Cheers "The Hatter" who now goes by many names to avoid detection by the gold police.

A PADI course wouldn't be too bad, its another cost but at least it doesn't expire, I did mine years ago. I know a few guys who have taken the compressors of their dredges and they are using snorkeling gear over shallow(er) bedrock ... not sure where they would fit in but these wombles from wellington in their tweed jackets with leather arm patches probably wouldn't think twice to lump them with a square peg / round hole bureaucratic 'solution'.

I say a PADI course wouldn't be too bad because I know what work safe would really want, and it could well be a full Class 3 commercial divers ticket, an 8 week full time course just to get back to doing what many have been doing for a decade. If worksafe have a financial interest or have been getting 'lobbied' (palms getting greased) then you can bet bottom dollar that nobody will be able to stick their head under water without full commercial training.

Dunno... I think there is a clear line in the sand difference between a commercial and recreational activity.... and if not there needs to be, ie....

Do you still need to work for a living or is gold dredgingrecovery your primary source of income?

If it is a hobby then it is no different from fishing and diving for a feed of scallops or crays.... heaven knows that I probably get more $ value from sea food than from gold (for my own consumption I might add)...

I can not see worksafe NZ getting very far if they attempt to police recreational activities... diving... fishing,... hunting....jet boating..... motor racing.... lawn bowls....

And Padi does not cut it with work safe for commercial diving....
