I'm after feedback on what I can do to keep the killer sandflies away, has anyone here got any first hand experience with Permethrin clothing treatments, does it work on gold field sandflies? how long does it really last? where did you buy it from? is it snake oil or the next big thing that us kiwis seem slow to catch onto?

For anyone that doesn't know Permethrin is a general purpose insect repellent that is applied to clothing, and when dried is meant to provide a long lasting (doesn't wipe or wash off in fresh water, and survives 5 to 6 trips through the clothes washer) and effective treatment against biting insects, its recommended that those travelling to areas with malaria, dengue fever, and zika virus treat all the clothing that they are to wear with this product.
It is non-toxic when dried, touted to be non-allergenic, was developed for military use, and is based on a synthetic version of natural pyrethrum.
Its mode of action once dried is to kill any biting insects which land on the treated clothing.

I'm looking for an alternative to covering myself in toxic DEET for days on end, which only seems to kind of almost work some of the time on the gold field sandflies

I use these wrist straps, one on left wrist, another on right ankle.
They're not cheap, can be bought from most camping/outdoor stores.
The tablets last for a couple of weeks, so they are good value for money.

Just wear long sleeves. Best protection there is and its chemical free.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

In New Guinea we used to soak our clothes in some stuff we got from the Travel Doctor at 220 queen st Auckland. Which I think was permithren. Didn't work at all against night flying mozzies.
Sadly tropical deet is the only thing that I have found to be 100% effective against bities

I got into dredging to get away from the little biting bleeders - apparently they don't like coming after you underwater. Though I have inhaled the odd one when using a snorkel! :P

Hahaha Gavin, that is particularly aweful, nothing will make you choke more than a mosquito stuck on the back of your throat!
Might be a good idea to glue some plastic gauze over the end.
