I would recommend a beach- but if its old coins you are looking for then I would recommend doing some research on your area.

Here are some more things you need to know:
you can detect in most parks but sports fields and lake areas you can't. You must make sure you refill your holes and put the plug back in neatly. Otherwise you should be good. enjoy detecting and find lots of gold and silver ;) .Good Luck and Happy Hunting, LittleKiwi.

Plugs are generally seen as bad form these days.
Use the "T", or any slit method (keeps the cut turf attached so it doesn't get sucked out by mowers and keeps roots intact to avoid patches of dead turf), don't carry a spade and practice, practice, practice your pinpointing.
When funds allow, I definitely recommend getting an X-Pointer probe. Often allows you to extract goodies with little more than a finger-sized hole in the ground, and greatly speeds retrieval.

As LKD says, playing fields are no-go, as are historic sites/Pa sites etc.

For starting out, I recommend working the edge of scrub/trees of a quiet reserve away from the paths, or ask around your friends/family - Any house that's been there for a few years has potential. Areas around the edge of swimming holes are always good for loose change.

Lookouts are another one - Imagine climbing a steep hill in summer. Get to the top, and drop down on the grass to catch your breath or take the jacket off to cool down. All good for coin spills.

Keep a log of where you find good stuff, and very soon you'll see a pattern forming enabling you to improve your hit rate.

I would recommend using a digging knife or lesche and a screwdriver to dig more efficiently, as for plugs if you only cut half way around and don't remove them then you should be fine but MW is correct with people viewing them as damaging ground. If you are looking for a good pinpointer for beginners bounty hunter has a good probe for about $70 but I'm not entirely sure about where to get them... You can always check out puiakisupply.co.nz and have a look at the fisher f-point.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting, LittleKiwi.

Also just got a GF 40...
Im currently practicing in the back yard
Burying some stuff to see how the detector responds and then refining the extraction technique
since your profile says you are in welly maybe head to days bay or near the end of eastbourne near the light house coz heaps of people hang out there

Hi Tom, it's usually best not to identify locations in the open forum as lots of Guests read this forum and then those spots get hammered.
really keen to see how the Gofind 40 works out for you I have been eyeing one up myself as a backup detector.

No worries I get down to the tron occasionally for work and have a spot or 2 there. I can flick you a PM next time I get down there and we can go for a hunt if you are keen.
