Hi Guys, what do you'll think will be the impact on the popularity of fossicking if gold prices continue to rise? Do you think this will make finding alluvial gold and selling gold more popular with the general public? We really enjoyed watching Gold Rush Alaska and more recently the CNN 'Gold Rush' series... :)

The higher the price the more out there looking!

Why dont you list the prices you pay for gold daily and also the likes of scrap gold/silver - the reason I ask is that I have just got a lot of pre 1946 silver coins and half thinking of selling a few ounces of gold.

The easing of global monetary conditions in response to the liquidity squeeze in the latter part of 2011 has boosted gold.

"Some further stimulus measures could now be postponed by an improving economic outlook, at least in the US. Nonetheless, negative real returns, adjusted for risk, are undermining confidence in major currencies as a store of value. We expect gold prices to hit new highs by year end."

Meanwhile, gold fell more than 1 pc on Friday, hurt by a slide in the euro after a Greek party leader said he couldn't back the 130-billion euro bailout deal the country needs to avoid going bankrupt, which comes at the cost of painful austerity measures.

Spot gold fell as low as $1,703.69 an ounce and was down 0.9 percent at $1,715.49 an ounce. US gold futures for February delivery were down $23.30 an ounce at $1,717.90.

Alex Zumpfe, a trader at Heraeus precious metals house, said: "The market is in risk-off mood again with stock markets weaker as well. Gold is facing some selling pressure after support levels didn't trigger sufficient buying interest.

"Physical buying evolved on the lows but were obviously not strong enough to support the market," he added. "Technically, it cannot be ruled out that further weakness might occur if the 1,710 area doesn't hold.

the higher the gold price, and the more bloody reality crap series on gold there are, the more people are out there all right, dreaming of getting rich.

while there are always a few newcomers that end up getting hooked each year most are just playing around.

the best part is when they decide to dig right where you have been systematically working down to bedrock, making a hell of a mess and achieving nothing. there are of course some good buggers out there also that realise you are putting a lot of effort in. then again there's just as many ready to screw you over.

love the high prices but that's only good if you are ready to sell, personally i think a lot of people would be better off with low prices keeping away the mass crowds and scavengers.

a lot of the guys i know that are serious simply enjoy being outdoors and learning where the gold is. amazing to watch guys with years of experience and how they go about it. and i'm not talking about having to have a big bloody dredge. some guys i think find just as much without the burden of heavy expensive equipment.

In addition to what Simon said above it will also unfortunately result in more illegal actions such as more stealing of gold jewellery to

sell to pawn shops, more use of dredges in public fossicking areas and heaven forbid, bushwacking people of their gold after a hard days fossicking.

A recent example being high copper prices resulting in power and phone cables being cut and sold to scrap dealers.
