This was nearly 4 years ago lol.
Problem is gold is where you find it.
And where gold has been historically worked why shouldn't people be allowed to mine what has already been done. Area would have already been messed up, probably more so than today as back then there were fewer rules and bigger equipment and pretty much a free for all with no environmentalists present.
Bit of a bugger places that get a title and become off limits. Sure, some of the historic stuff needs left alone but where does it end. The irony is DOC themselves seem ok to plough over historic spots as they see fit without any hassles, damaging stuff as they go.
I'm guessing someone in this case was going hard and someone has caught them out. Never a good idea to set up a dredge somewhere on the walking network. Does anyone know more. Wonder if it was a personal gripe against the miners or just some greenie on their high horse out to save the planet.
Sniping should be ok in most places too. How much ground can be covered sniping. Would take someone a lifetime to do anything major.

A pan here, small sluice box there, metal detector everywhere... little damage is caused.

If you can afford a powered sluice/dredge you can afford to buy a claim.
