Visited the mine in the weekend. There are still rail tracks in the tunnel.
Does anyone know what was mined out of Cloustons mine. Can't seem to find any information.

Hi Mags

There is a couple of pages in "Lost Gold" by Paul Bensemann which covers a bit of the Clouston mine (N/W Nelson KK)

The Kirkcaldie brother started it but only built the hut and started the fluming before going back to Wellington to take over running Kirkcaldie & Stains from their father.

Takaka County then got involved as at that time the Government were paying a Pound for Pound scheme. This was 1911.

By June that year the council had already built 4 km of Upper Takaka house track towards the "Mountain of Gold"

The Mining was headed by Robert Clouston and just above the treeline drove a 126 metre horizontal tunnel with a railway line and mining truck or wagon. Mine workers were housed in a log cabin with a rubberoid roof built in the beech forest just below.

Godfrey Grooby age 16 when the mine was going strong in 1912 called the venture a real swindle and before the officials and investors arrived who were subsidising the unprofitable venture arrived, miners "fired fine gold into the wall with a shotgun'. Clouston's descendants have disputed this statement.

Hope this helps'

Just found it interesting that there was no information readily available about the history of the mine,or what was mined out of Clouston's mine. Still looks fairly well preserved, though quite a bit of water in tunnel.
