I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money in case she doesnt stick with it but any suggestions of metal detectors that would suit a young girl for beach searching would be grateful. She had a very cheap and nasty one which did nothing so she lost interest quickly. There are a few on TradeMe between $100-$200 but unsure on which would be a better brand etc

Thanks all

Hi mate,
I reckon the fisher F2 that you can get at www.puiakisupply.com or you can get a mine lab go find (I recommend go find 20 but 40 is more quality. The 40 and f2 both cost $350

Tis the season, it seems.

I replied to another recent enquiry here:
Christmas Gift for an 11 Year Old

I'm not sure how the GoFind 40 handles damp salty sand, but I run a Fisher F4 and that is very scatty when salt makes an appearance so I think your best bet will be the GoFind over the F2.

I wouldn't say so- the go find would be more likely to stuff up. Though you are the expert. I reckon we are going to be faced with a lot of these questions soon...
If you really want to see wether she is actually still interested then buy something such as the gofind or fisher and then get a coil cover. this will stop scratching ss but won't allo as much depth- this should be fine as most people can't dig that great. (When I started I couldn't even get the shovel in the dirt)

What ever the decision is, hope it works!

whichever you decide, try to at least get your metal detector from an Authorised NZ Dealer -

when you are starting out, its not so much what detector you will be using, but more importantly, the backup and support from these guys is invaluable - In most cases, those selling cheap detectors on our local auction site will NOT be able to give you the advice & support you will need when starting out in this wonderful hobby...........

hope this helps
