Hey, I'm headed to South Island.
I detect, but am keen to help any fossickers dig rivers, move large rocks, & even locate good spots.
Just happy to keep fit between detecting - I'm also amphibious (so is my detector) I come with a wetsuit, and my own small shovel.
I've a dynamo - if ya' desperate to charge up a cellphone/battery/detector.
Won't clutter your campsite as I roost in trees (hammock).
Don't require feeding either - selfsufficient. Best of all, allergic to alcohol, so won't be scabbing ya' beers.
If I find flakes ya' can keep 'em, I'm after the biggies.

Nelson area late December.
Westport/Reefton Early January.
Cross Fiordland to Qtown at some point
Queenstown area (time depending on how much of a battering Keas give me & if I survive Fiordland).
Invercargill area. After this I might swim to Coal Island (depending on how invincible I feel)
Then free for a bit, I'll probably head up to Hagley Park, or even back to a successful site.

I'll update these time estimates as I travel.

Hey Pandemic, when you get to Queenstown, leave a note in the forum, so we know that you have survived, and how we might recognize you, feral critters do get a rather harsh treatment on this side of the devide.

Hey just saw that you are heading to the fiords any idea where abouts you are thinking of heading ? I have spent quite a bit of time working on some of the old historical stuff down there and I have always wanted to see what you could pick up with a good detective stick I played around with a pan a few times but never had much time for a good play there is huge potential in my mind to find good gold down there.

I plan on following Alphonse Barringtons route. He found some gold in the northern Cascade area.
And he dumped a swag of gold too - was too heavy as he was dying.

I might be in several remote areas for up to a month at a time.
But if I find a reef I'll probably disappear & live in my own dug mine shaft :)
I'll be sure to post you guys letting you know I've found the motherload and hunkering down.
