Lammerlaw, you will turn into a geek yet. Get any better at this and you'll be able to take over from Gavin when he goes to Oz with his new GPX 4500.

I was pretty impressed when I had a look at this battery about 10 years ago. I am more impressed to see it working. Good to see some of those Doc dollars going to a good cause.

Thanks for the video.

You may also be interested in this Sunday's Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust trip:

An invitation to all interested in Goldfields Heritage.

Bring your friends and make up a car load.

Guided Tour of Cambrians, Nicholson Lake, St Bathans, Blue Lake, Surface Hill, and Falls Dam

Sunday 18 September start 9.30am at Becks

On behalf of the Central Otago Branch Committee of NZHPT we welcome you to attend a guided tour of the St Bathans region, rich in Gold heritage.

We will meet outside Becks Hotel at 9.30am to commence the tour and travel first to Cambrians, where originally a group of Welsh settlers, mined for gold from 1861. It is now a quiet residential hideaway with many old cottages well preserved.

We will then deviate to Nicholson Lake another remnant of the mining era.

St Bathans is a well known tourism spot, but we will have the advantage of being guided on the history and points of special interest on the mining and heritage buildings. There will be additional material supplied for your heritage library. We will have extended time in St Bathans for lunch and an opportunity to walk the lake (45 minutes).

We then move onto Surface Hill which is of interest for its palaeontology as well as for its gold mining. We will also visit Falls Dam, an earth dam built in 1935. Very good photography here after a short walk to the dam.

Some of the sites are on private land and depending on weather (pray for a good day)

most cars will be able to traverse the access routes to historic sites. Some short walks will be necessary at Surface Hill and Falls Dam so bring suitable shoes and clothing.

The event is free but a paper dollar donation towards organising costs, advertising etc. would be much appreciated.

We will all meet outside the Beck’s Hotel at 9.30am (prompt) Sunday 18th September.

To register your tour attendance, or if you require further information about any aspects of the tour please contact:

David White – Chairman Central Otago Branch Committee NZHPT

There was a three stamp battery at Nenthorn once and I tried to buy it - I am still after a three stamper as I have an old engine that just might...or might not...run it. An old single banger the same but much smaller than the Golden Point engine.

Yes it is nice country - I have always liked it.

My timing is never just wrong but the blasted place is all closed up - last time I went there from Dunedin it took me two weeks to get there and then I drove home to Dunedin in one day.

the museum is closed for the winter, opens october-ish usually.
or at least it used to, haven't been that way for a couple of years.
i'll be heading that way in january, taking the olds for a holiday to the coast.
heading up to denniston to see the improvements and the new train ride in the
old mine.

kiwijw - Great photographs - last time I was there I had a walk around the sheds but all was locked - I am quite sure it should have been open but highly suspect that they heard I was coming so locked everything up quickly and hid!
I went to look at the dredge down the river at Ngahere as well but it was so expensive to go over it that considering I am bankrupt, insolvent and financially embarrassed due to the fact that I married a 'goldminer' I couldnt afford to get out of the car let alone go onto the dredge!
One of my desires was to own a stamper but the closest I got was my older daughter when she throws tantrums...I do have a sluicing gun but need the tapered nozzle department...and the brass name plate off one of Otago's historic stampers which my old goldmining partner pillaged during the 1930s.
I also wouldnt mind one or more of the old dredge buckets - good pot plant holder in the sitting room!

I remember in the 1969 - 1970 when I was working at Totora Flat going in the gang truck somewhere in behind I dont know where, maybe Bell Hill or Hochstetter, Nelson Creek, Ahaura or even up Haupiri way and there was the remains of a large gold dredge. I always intended to go back and twice in the last ten years went looking for it but never found it...completely, totally and absolutely disorientated. The boss or someone told us that someone had scraped some of the cracks and crevices on the dredge in years past and got some good fine gold and if you have any idea of where it might be then it could be well worth a look.

Profound - does that mean that you have an inflated ego and have finally landed or an unjustified and personal snipe at others which from the anonimity of a computer keyboard is an act of cowardice? If the latter then if you cannot contribute positively then why contribute at all?
