Cleaned up a rock I've had sitting around for months, so glad that I did as I got a very nice surprise.. very visible gold flakes and seams, and the whole rock glistens from the amount of dust in it.

Its pretty big, so I took a photo of it before I broke it up with a sledgehammer.. and the inside is riddled with it. I'm pretty pleased to say the least!!

Its the first time I've looked closely at the volcanic rock here. Mainly I've been focusing on the smaller mineral quartz type of rocks in area, which contain a bit of dust but nothing like this.

If you really want to know what you have got, get in touch with John Isdale at the Thames School of Mines, Phone -07 868 6227.
Alternatively, have a look at their website to check when they are open, throw a few rocks in the car and come for a drive. An hour or so of your time and you will know whether or not you can have an early retirement.

I took some better photos of some of the pieces after I broke it up.. its very floury, so I'm guessing that its similiar to coromandel gold just going by what I've read.

The very last image of the bottom grid, and the one above it don't really do justice to that segment of rock. In person it looks like its got glitter all though it, its beautiful!

Have you dollyed up a rock to see if lt is gold? I had someone come up to me asking to take some rocks home and test them for gold Over here in W.A ,could obviously see it was large chunks of pyrite but he wouldn't believe me so I just went and grabbed my detector to show him lol,any way I would be grinding them up then going to find the source :)

Hehe, yeah.. I can see why potentially someone would think pyrite is gold, although I would expect you to know what you are talking about if you prospect for a hobby! I've turned up a bit of pyrite in the area, and it seems to be very cubic. The stuff in the rock is very dusty and floury, and under a glass looks quite round..

I crushed a bit of the big rock up, and it sure seems like gold or a gold amalgam.. I've been pottering around crushing some small bits that I found in the same area and that seems to contain it too. Will send a bit off this week to get put through a machine and find out for sure. If it comes back positive, I guess I'll be investing a bit of money in equipment. Currently dollying using a hammer, dust pan and the marble mortar and pestle from the kitchen. If hubby catches me using it, I'll be in the dog box! I think it was given to him as a present.. lol

If it's grey vein, and heavier than expected you're on the right track.
Gold appears as a dull yellow in ore.

Thanks for the info, that sounds about right with what I'm doing seeing.

Is that because in ore its generally an amalgam? I was playing with a magnet the other day on the black sand, and it appears that a good portion of the black sand is infact some silver non metallic metal. It could be silver, I guess.. from what I understand coromandel gold is often found with silver and electrum.

Really need to get my a into g and find out for sure lol

I just visited the Mines Museum in Thames today.
And picked up this rock north of Thames this afternoon, the grey bit at the front of the picture is what you looking for.
Though it will need to be crushed & chemically extracted.

There is silver, sometimes mercury as cinnarbar which gives it a pale crimson tinge.

On a horse farm, somewhere near the Hunua Range Auckland. An undiscovered gold field strewn with float quartz, containing visible gold.
The motherlode cannot be far off. It is indeed a wonderous find. Almost like the gold in Ghana, which is another wonderous find. Oh these opportunities do whet my whistle. And I have $100,000,000 just sitting in the Bank getting a measly 2.70% interest. I need to invest it in a better deal.

My guess is it is a bit north of the ranges hatter is talking about, Maraetai is around about were I reckon it is. I found some old tales about gold mines being sunk in and around the mountain there.

http://www.aucklandlibra...inginthe19thcentury.aspx

http://www.teara.govt.nz...mineral-resources/page-8

For some more reading, also they reckoned that there were nuggets in some of the streams but there would have been a hell of allot more mining activity if nuggets were found so I think it is not real.
