I have a hammock and then I place a line parallel above this and drape a tarp nearly to the ground (depending on the tree secure points for my ropes).
Now I've heard Kea's are a major problem ripping into tents at night. However I've heard off the tracks they are a bit shyer, and hope my set up won't interest them as much.
I might put my back & detector in the hammock with me (as my back pack will mostly contain sleeping bag, inflatable ground roll, hammock, and freeze dry food).
I also sleep talk - wonder if that would deter them :D

If you have any experience with them, I'd love to know.

At night time the onlything you'll have to worry about is the bogey monsters , possums & possibly doc kea,s at night time not so much though a kiwi looking for a little white jafa worm could be a different story lol , during the day a different story

Forget the Kea.

It's the Maeroero you need to worry about.

Personally I would be most concerned about the sandflies down there. I have it on good authority that they exist in sufficient size and number to drain all the blood from a man in less than 5 seconds.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Thanks for that. Now when I am attacked by possums, stoats, keas or GIANT MOSQUITIOS I'll be fearing Taniwha!

My brother did mention mosquito's - I'm taking 2 bottles of insect repellent. My hammock seals naturally at the top when I lay in it and have not had troubles with bugs in the past.
I will be only taking dried nuts and dehydrated food. So hopefully nothing that will attract possums - though I imagine they're quite under control down that way with the new tree bait stations they have.

I'll post some pictures of my pack gear soon.

Poor Kea! You should count yourself lucky if some get close enough to play with your belongings. One of the most intelligent bird species in the world albeit curious and cheeky.
