Hey all! I had some time to go out to the beach here in Auckland to have a little look around with my detector. I found a lot of junk... to be expected... and an old penny. But the last thing I found before heading home I have no idea what it is... it looks like silver plated brass? Not sure but here are some pics.

Hi Goldnut, I am in Ak at christmas time. I stay with my parents on the North shore and canvas the beaches from takapuna to longbay and beyond. Thi summer I will be there three weeks with my family and there are several places I want to go to hunt coins . The first is Mission Bay, crack of dawn, after a big summer day when thousands of people have been there the day before dropping their jewellry and coins. Another place I want to go is a place where there was an American base during the war. When I was a kid I went there and remember pulling 303 stripper clips and expended shells from the sand dunes. I'd love to revisit the area and find some old war stuff.

Does it pull open? Looks like a wee canister of sorts.

It sort of looks like a lipstick container - I think I found one or two of them with my metal detector years ago.

I did try to open it... but it seems to be stuck. I did give it a spray with some lube... but still wont open. I think that it might be a lipstick container from the early 1900's as I have found some that look similar online. I am still hoping that it will open. These last few tsunami have cut away at the beaches which has loosened a lot of old buried treasures. I can't wait to go out and search the rest of the beach!

Hey there Goldnut, nice find. I have damaged a couple of finds because at first i was to impatient to clean them up for viewing etc. Work it slowly by picking away each little bit of sand etc, use some water and dish soap but in saying that would there be anything inside it that may get further damage.. Interesting thought. I also think that any sort of detector is ok for a beach. Most stuff is right there up to a foot down or so.

Thanks for that. I haven't forced it yet and did accidentally break a small bit... hardly noticeable but I will definitively take my time now.

Success!!!! I had another look at the capsule and I saw a small dent. I gently squeezed on the opposite sides and sure enough it opened!!! and yes it is a lipstick container and it even has some of the original lipstick still in it!!!! Here are some pictures.
