Finally took my tokens out of the olive oil they have been soaking in for a while and thought Id start a new page for all to share what tokens we have found. I personally think tokens have a greater history value than normal coins as they are more specific to a certain store or profession from a particular city.
So here we go. All of these tokens were found in the inner city parks of Christchurch.
Enjoy and feel free to post pics of what tokens you have found. Id love to see what other tokens have been found.

Cool idea mate. For those interested in this part of our social history, a token is always a VERY special find.
I'll get some of mine up over the next day or two.
There is also a very good book available online (the name escapes me at the mo) that has detailed and comprehensive info on all NZ (nationwide) token issuers/merchants of the time, including a brief but comprehensive bio of their life and business. It also includes a hand drawn pic of each style of token they produced. I'll dig out my copy and post a pic of it when I post some token pics.

Can someone explain their uses?
The only modern comparisons I can think of is Laundromat or Milk tokens.

I believe that back in the 1840s -50s ?? there was a shortage of currency so business owners were allowed to make there own currency by the way of tokens. The internet does have a big spiel about it somewhere.
Here it is...see link, some very interesting reading
