Hey all, I have been doing some research and found that at some point in the early gold rush there was a smaller rush to the maraetai area. Does this ring a bell with anyone? And do you think that there might be anything there? cheers.

I tried a couple of the streams in the area but they were more farm streams with dirt bottoms... I am planning to try a few others before I give up the chase. I have read of a man that found a few good sized nuggets in that area... and there seems to have been some mines from way back. I will keep you all updated. It would be nice to get some pay-dirt close by.

Try this for info

Makes for interesting reading.

Plus this, in which the position of one on the old mines is pinpointed.

That makes for interesting reading thanks Frank.

It is interesting as to how much information there is out there about nearly everything, if only one knows where to look.

thanks frankb, very interesting read

Hi Goldnut
access to whitford forest is difficult, and it seems to me from the reporting that the gold would be too fine for a metal detector however may show up in a pan. I have been in there only a few times a few years back surveying, i did cast my eye around the area as there were rock outcroppings in many places, the streams were very muddy though and wouldnt lend to panning very easily.

Good luck, you never know

that reminds me

there were shafts sunk in the main outcropping on horseshoe bush road in dairy flat, i used to live just up the road and spoke to neighbours about them, they were sunk in the 1930s after finding gold the stream, again though the shafts proved worthless, i went and panned the streams in serveral spots however were very muddy with no real bottom

the search continues

Thanks for that. I am not fussed about fine gold... as long as there IS gold to be found it will keep my goldfinger from itching... lol
