Hi Ed, was a good hunt that day, that token sure is a rarity, as you say has caused some what of a stir in the milk token community.
Did some diggin around and found out the milk vendor at the time was Richard Benner. He married a woman who went by the name of Heffer and they had three children together.
Anyhows as to the inscription GB is still a bit of a mystery. I will ask another customer of mine today and see what she says.

Hi Shane,
Thanks for the info, much appreciated, yes it did turn out to be a good hunt.
Mike Carter of Australia who keeps the catalogue of all New Zealand and Australian Tokens has advised that this one hadn't been recorded before now.
Here is a copy of the entry for the catalogue.

"G B Token found by Ed Harding in 2015 while metal detecting at a bay very near to Paihia. The token’s reverse uses the same die as the KK MS tokens which have been tentatively assigned to Kerikeri also in Northland. G B is assumed to be the vendor’s initials.
Thank you to Ed Harding and David Galt of Mowbray Collectables for passing on the information
NL12e Obv: G B
Rev: ONE / (5 dot crosses) / PINT
(same reverse die as the KK MS tokens)"

I remember Richard Benner delivering our milk in Kerikeri but that was before bottles. He had a red van with cream cans in the back and would use a dipper to dispense milk from them in to our tin billy's. The van used to pong a bit in the summer. Fortunately we were on the morning run in Shepherds road.

Perhaps CB was the initials of the farm name???
Dont know really. It's a long time ago now.

Hi Metal Kiwi
Yes another customer of mine said the same thing. The milk vender would dip one of his measuring cups into your billy for the day.
Tokens were used after this period and it was suggested that they were brass !
So the mystery continues.
