no, never. i think its probably something you'd have to order in from the us or uk. whitcoulls could prob do this but there's always the web. bookdepository.co.uk does free worldwide shipping i think.

Ok thanks. I saw a reference to an ozzie mag called gold, gems and treasure on here earlier and it looks quite good. I asked a couple of big magazine stores here but they couldnt even get it. Looks like a subscription is the only way. Cheers.

The Australian mag is pretty good. every now and again they come out with a special edition on gold fossicking. I have copies going back to the late 80's which I have kept hold of. I have a few newer ones but nothing recent. I still ook googly eyed at some of the stuff that is found over there but it seems like quite a few hardworking, lucky people here are gettig into it as well

Gold, Gem and Treasure is a fabulous magazine but judging by the comments of the one eyed and one tracked minds of most on the forum few here would actually like it!!!
Many of the articles are on the various goldfields and their histories, characters of the goldfields, coin and other treasure hunting (that will put most here off!) hunting for Gemstones and other rocks and minerals (that will put even more off)
To all those who like gemstones, coins and relic hunting and gold prospecting these magazines are indeed a must.

I was thinking of you when I read an article on their website (they have random ones from some issues) that was about the old pistols that the miners used and how the author had found quite a few in the goldfields. One of those would be a great find. They had a neat one that was a pocket knife that had a trigger drop down and was then a pistol! They used the knife to help get the gold and the pistol to ward off thieves/robbers etc.(could have done with one today!)
I also have a vast selection of rocks etc and am currently selling online for Hetties Rock Shop up here in ChCh. The owners are my brother's in law.
I have a big (1 metre long) slab of petrified wood that I'm quite proud of amongst other things. I'm toying with the idea of selling it but have no idea if it is valuable. Would you happen to know, Lammerlaw?

I saw a piece of petrified wood on trademe which was about that size just a short time ago...actually I have just had a look again and its relisted I think - it isnt NZ but from Java in Indonesia and they have a start price the same as the buy now price - $1295. I note a 15kg piece as well with a start price of $125 and no reserve!...In both cases no bidders to date.
I bought a piece of length 600mm at the Rock hounds club, bidding against everyone else and got it for around fifty dollars - so I guess that at the end of the day it is worth what someone is prepared to pay. A 1 metre long piece if it is Mt Somers is probably better than the Java material in my opinion.
I must go searching for the article on the pistols - I have a fairly good collection of actual goldfields pistols. As for rocks - love them - they have silent auctions at the Dunedin Rock and Mineral Club and I always take something home.,,,Metal ores mostly and fossils.
I did see a piece of Tui mine Galena on trademe and asked the vendor if he had a bigger pieces - "Yes" he said so I asked him to list it - I bought it - $85 plus $25 postage from up Auckland way - it weighed 25kg - thats more my size!
My Great great grandfather purchased an Adams revolving pistol complete in presentation case which he carted around the goldfields including Gabriels Gully but I aint got it.
You keep your pertified wood as pieces that size dont turn up every day!"
As for needing a pistol today - the best way to get the police there before the phone has even been hung up is to tell them that you had to shoot the culprit in self defence!

Theres the gun article....not a lot of info but interesting.
Wow! I thought the petrified wood may be worth $50 as Id gotten in return for around $80 of welding/engineering. I'm in such dire straights for cash at the moment, I may have to let it go unfortunately. Thats why I was investing in a detector as it can bring in a few coins here and there to help with the small bills that our teens always need paid.
I'l post a pic of some of my petrified wood and cooler rocks/fossils later in the proper place but some can be seen on trademe under the username roks11 if anyone is keen. I may be able to do a wee discount to anyone from here.
You are an interesting bloke Mr Lammerlaw. I really enjoy talking to people that have multiple hobbies like myself. I find they are the most intelligent people also. :)

Many thanks for the gun article - I appreciate that. I once wrote an article for a club magazine on goldfield firearms - a person could tell a great deal a miner by the pistol he carried, background, place of origin and history in some cases.
I have a pistol here complete with holster and named and dated 1862 - the gun itself is an 1851 Adams and certainly saw Central otago and also Maori War country simply because f the movements of its owner.
I shall keep an eye on the rocks you offer on Trademe but not really buying at the moment as a project budgetted for $60,000 has gone to $130,000 and I am sort of destitute...Hmmm - well as for a foldies goes anyway.
As for multiple hobbies dont even get me started...I think my email address is in my profile is it not if you wish to write. I have a huge number of collecting interests but mainly militaria, goldfields relics, rocks...well actually I can list another thirty or so collection interests here!
