Yeah great find TONZNZ but pardon my ignorance I have not heard of a dump before, is it a coin?
Can we see the other side?

The best find I have ever seen in this part of the world - tremendous - I thought a 'dump' was a colloqualism for a Number Two or somewhere to throw things out!

Back to seriousness I think these coins were the centre taken out of Spanish coins - NSW had to make their own coins I think so they got Spanish ones and stamped the centre out so that the centre was the 'Dump' and the outer ring was known as a 'Holey Dollar' - They must be used today because the Pope will buy his Fish and Chips with Holey Dollars I assume!...Or would that be Holey Liras?

Congratulations on what I think is the best find yet - I think it must be silver? Am I right - regardless of that I actually do think it is better than finding a sovereign and I would rather find that whether it is silver or gold than a sovereign.

Thanks for sharing the link about it.
Once again I am amazed at where this hobby can lead us

Wow, I kind of have it in my mind that there are no real 'treasures' in NZ, just might have to give it a re-think. Thanks for letting us in on such a great find.

I have found a sovereign, but that Dump would beat it hands down! Congratulations!

Now you just have to hunt around to find a Holey Dollar to make a set! :)

I love chch for detecting! I swear I've cleaned up every public and school bark playground there! Te he he! My trick for schools is to take my kids as field agents. When I'm with them no one thinks about the guy with the detector, as in what is that fat middle aged guy doing at our school with a metal detector. All they see is a father with his kids playing in the playground. Cunning plan! I was told by the miners den people in chch that a detectorist has found over 30 gold sovereigns on the banks of the avon through Hagley park, where people used to sit back in the day. I've never been game enough to dig hagley park though.

Digging up hagley park! Imagine the arseholes you would get moaning at ya?! I was with nzpoohbear40 the other day and had kids telling us that it was their school and that they wanted any coins we found....staunch little buggers.....i asked them if their parents didnt teach them any manners and they kinda shut up....for a minute. :P
