Cheers guys. Nothin sparks up a bit of interest like GOLD does. Whether it be a ring or a nugget. 4 months and 19 rings later...Glad to finally find my bit. And yes, that silver ring is a doozy too. Big trip up north next week. 4 days of fishing and fossicking. Cant wait.

#37 trip. Hi all. Back from our trip up north. Started at Cape Rienga, Tapotupotu, Spirits Bay and Rawawa Beach. The detecting was tough going as the first two beachs were a couple of meters thick with sand. I basically found nothing on the beaches. Around the walk tracks and behind the dunes produced some finds. Best was a grouping of 5 florins and a half penny. A rocky rod holder, a funny lookin brass thing...some sinkers, 2 in goldies, 27 coins all up. Not a lot for four days but a good time was had. Heaps of kingfish up there but a lack of kahawai for livies. Love the far far north it is so awesome.

The finds. 27 coins

Well Madsonic, you made a mean GOLD ring find. Made mine look like a kinder surprise...lol. Nice one. Conditions looked great up north but the fishing was very slow. We caught two kahawai only. Seen some kingfish. Seen one landed there about 17 kilo. And there were more around but noone could catch any livebaits.
The rocky rod holder is a solid piece which you jam in the rocks to hold your rod. Specially for live baiting sticks and the such. And they are not cheap to buy. Found it wrapped in a sock in the sand, cool ah. The brass .... is a fairly reosonable one and someone will be unhappy bout loosing that...haha. I do not use such a thing and will be discarding it thoutfully. Yeh right...
So wots the chances of finding 5 florins in one hit/patch, awesome i say. Found the aussie one first and its in really good condition with no corrosion, odd. The 1943 one is fairly shiny and the rest are tarnished. Not worth tryin to clean them, better as they are. And i was only walking back to the car in the middle of the night waving the ace around on the way. Walktracks hold alot of treasure sometimes.
Oh, check this out. I was surfing the net yesturday when i found the most amazing topic which really caught me off guard. Shanes Page No.8 nzgfforum. Thought i was seein things but no, there i was. How cool. So i guess we are really all out there and everything we publish. It was my last posting about the rocky rod holder that brought it up. I was a little concerned at first cos it showed the brass thing which i should of disguized, maybe. Yes the whole world is watching and that was a little wake up call. I have allready edited some posts of late, mainly anything that involves privasy/private land/regular haunts, stuff like that. I have learned this thru others on this site and i am generally cautious with my posts. Each and every pic i do/post is to the best of my ability. I like to mention where i go but generally wont if im findin heasps at that particular spot...haha. Fossicking is so cool.
Wishing the GOLD ring fairy to you Poohbear. Shes a comin...

Shane I think the lack of corrosion on the 2 florins should be because the 1957 Aussie and the 1943 Kiwi florins are 50% silver content.

Yes that is correct. They are 50% silver. Up till 1945 they were 9.25% silver. Nice to hear from you Metal k. Florins are cool. Specially 5 at once...

All good Gnut. I often have a chuckle to meself about my own call sign...
Just gettin back to the florin. I have more detailed history.

British florin. 1849-1919 .925 fine silver
1920-1946 .500 silver
1947 cop-nickel

Australia florin. 1910-1945 .925
1946-1963 .500
1966 cop-nickel

NZ 3p, 6p, shilling, florin, half crown. 1933-1946 were all struck in .500 silver
1947 NZ and Britain went to cop-nickel

NZ made its own coinage from 1933

There are variations of siver contents/% in some of these silver coins. They relate to dates, coronations, war times etc.

OK, there we have it, a bit of accurate history i hope. I did read that some of our older coins were still redemable up until 2006. Also, is it fair to say that NZ had no .925% silver coins. Only the British ones. Coins are cool.

Shane
