Hi Ritchie. Great to hear from you. There is some stuff on picture downloads on page 3 of "A New Detector" And yes, if you shrink your piks, the way you are downloading now, they will pop up visually on your post i think.

great stuff there shane...Ritchie there is an easier way to upload your pictures just in the forum here itself.......Just type your now post that you want to add pics to
and the bottom of the post box you will see a little box that says ATTACH FILE TO THIS POST..make sure there is a checkmark in that box.....when you are done typing hit the POST button..it will take you to the next page that gives you the opertunity to browse for your pics to upload...so you up;oad there then once you have all the pics that you want for that post uploaded hit the BACK button and bang you are posted pictures and all...and yes if you can shrink your pics to about 500 pixel's they will apear on the page like shanes here instead of the veiwers having to download them.

Part 1. Gold Mining Experience in Aussie.
Aprox 20 odd years ago my best mate Tex and i went to Hill End NSW Australia on a G hunt. Was his idea. I knew nothing then. The idea was to dredge a hole in a stream there. Ten days in the goat hills. Spiders snakes gold adventure in a one horse town. Once we got there it took a couple of days to get the dredge set up at the hole. A couple of hours into the operation two faces apeared over the bank. Oh s..t. Two high ranking area officials you could say. Yip, we were on crown land. Nice one thanks Tex.. A goat hunter saw us and dobbed us in. Anyhow they checked our finds and said that we hadnt gone deep enough yet, pack up now.. We came to an agreement and left.. Oh s..t no.2 I left my ciggies and stash in the open boot back at camp and they were on there way to check said camp as well. When we got back sure enough they had found the smokes and they were gone. Infuriated i stormed into the local p..... s...... ''you took my smokes'' I was laughed out. I left in disgust. lol (Dam im an idiot sometimes) . Local pub that night the old timers laughed me out of the place just by stearing at me.. one said ''wot ya sum kind of idiot or somethin'' . Yip, this sure was a one horse town and by the way, i would never contemplate doing this again without permission first.

Part 2. The old man and his frypan.
So we were left to fossick around (luckily) when we came across a small creek not far from a house. We were pannin away when this old timer came along carrying a frypan. I guess this was his gold pan and he came down to check his holes. We got to talking about how the Chinese got heaps of gold especially in the white mans tailings and thus they were unpopular. He said that they could do a full pan in 21 seconds. He showed us and now we have the technique. They would hold compititions as to who was the fastest panner, down to just scerics in 11 seconds and colour only at around 21 seconds. Try it with 20 pieces of assorted lead.. Hint. You have to rinse and rake the dirt out really fast with your fingers first. Good luck. Let me know how you go.

Part 3. Fragments of gold
You mite be thinkin wot did we find. Fragments of gold, just a few flakes and dust after all that. It was an experience i tell you. Hill End historically was the first ever gold mining town in aussie, great place, glad i went there. Lookin back it would be nice to be there now.. ah yes, the chocolate coloured ford 500 (yuck, go the holdens) and trailer with all the gear runnin on lpg, 6 and a half hours inland past Bathhurst, snakes, spiders, (goats), fresh air and beer of coarse..lol

Part 4. The Gold Forum.
So, 20 odd years down the line bro sez lets go gold hunting and here i am on this forum. All g'd up and ready to roll. Got some gear, a detector, keen as. Tucked away in the treasures section, all good. Love posting my stuff and im glad i joined.

Hi all.

I've been out at night 3 times this week with a head lamp on my head on the beaches in Dunedin until midnight one night.

Front page of ODT was on Friday was an article about erosion along St Kilda, St Clair beaches and how some rugby/soccer fields above may have to be abandoned.

In blizzard-like conditions and howling winds and sand driving at me and with two pairs of gloves on I've been digging up over 300 coins. The earliest was a queen victorian shilling with a young profile. Can't work out date, but the coin looks to be 1870s. I'm giving it and the others an ammonia bath for a few days or weeks to see if I can recover and improve them. Silver never comes out of the beaches clean in my experiance although pennies and 1/2 pennies often do.

Also found about 20 nz coins from 1933 to 1946 from when they were 50/50 silver, and some other english 3 pence coins. The older english shilling is under the blackened silver ring. If you look closely you will see the young queen victoria.

I will take a photo of the beach so you can appreciate the undercut. Its really quite impressive. Today my strike rate was over 100 coins, last night 110 coins. Three rings this week two silver and one gold. Also two old kids toys made of lead. I started getting tired digging. What drove me on was the vague hope of the gleam of a gold sovereign. I'm sure there is one waiting for me. I'm going back tonight after 10pm when the tides recedes a little.

300 coins - That is a lot of digging! Check out Electrolysis for cleaning silver. I just use a desk top power supply but any mobile phone etc charger can be used, give the silver a zap in some washing soda dissolved in water and it will clean them in no time. But keep an eye on it and don't leave them in too long otherwise the item will start to get pitted.

My normal cleaning strategy for silver is:
1. A soak in CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust). Only use it on silver and never pennies etc, leave for 1/2hr if this doesn't work then 2, if it does then 3:
2. Zap with Electrolysis
3. Scrub with a tooth brush under water and dry off
4. Coat with Silvo and leave to dry then buff clean.

Ammonia can be a bit potent for silver, but its good for gold items.

Don't give up hope on the sovereign - they are out there :)

I managed to dig a gold ring on both Thursday and Friday nights, but got bugger all today's 2 hunts. Will head out again tomorrow morning at low tide to try again.
