hi. i am wondering if anyone has been to Gabriels Gully in Lawrence for fossick around. i know it is where the gold rush started way back, and i know it has been re-worked. Has anyone been and had much luck? me and a friend are going to head up there this week from invercargill and have some fun. i have been gold mining since i was a kid with my grandfather and know what to do, but any advice where to go at the gully would be appreciated!

Gidday,

It's a couple of years since I was there. The public fossicking area is not that big. A walk along the stream will soon show you where everyone else has had a bit of a dig.

From memory, the gravel is quite compacted or cemented. The stream has a low flow rate so it doesn't move the gravel around.

The best success I had at finding a bit of colour was in the creek itself, at the northern end of the area.

I much prefer a bit of water with enough current to throw the gravel around with a good flood now and then.

Have you had a crack at Waikaia?
