The proposed Correnso mine, an extension to Newmont Waihi Gold's current operations, could extend mining under the town until 2020. But if more precious metals are discovered, and another resource consent granted, the operation could be extended again.

The mining area under Waihi East would range from 130 metres to 350m underground and is the first time the company has mined in ore directly under a residential area.
