Out with the Bug today @ the beach-half a million bottle tops and twice as many of those #$@@**&^ foil tops fron Powerade bottles-god I hate those things!
Long story short I went down to the water and tried there, first time I have got the coil submerged.Within seconds it started falsing and about 3 seconds after that came up overload.
Now looking at Fishers website these coils are SUPPOSED to be waterproof.

Have I buggered the coil and why did this happen?

Could the falsing have been caused by the conductivity of the salt water? Try it in some freshwater (bucket) - if it does the same then there is a leak in the coil, if it doesn't then it would be from the conductivity of the salt.

Yeah, they are water proof I have dunked mine quite a few times. Salt water makes mine act up a bit, but it still more or less works.

FFS... Looks like I have a leaky coil.Dried it out from this morning, seemed to work ok then tried it in a bucket of fresh water-exactly the same.
What do I do now?Dry it out again, seal it and hope for the best?

Isnt it still under warranty ?, if so get in touch with the people you got it from ,otherwise you just have to try and seal it and hope for the best.

in that case i would dry it out and silicone it if you can find the crack..then maybe get a coil cover for it and try it again. i think rgmcbrid has some covers for fisher coils..but check with him to be sure if he has your size.

Just as a little aside if you have the problem of a leak like this and its hard to find. If while its wet you carefully warm the offending plastic object with a hair drier ( dont get it hot ) just till the surface dries then stop. You will see moisture seeping out from the leak. Mark the spot with a pencil and then put it away somewhere warm to dry out This may take 4-5days or more in the hot water cupboard. Mask the area to be sealed and apply a thin layer of MS silicone ( MS sticks better to plastic) smooth the silicone with a finger wetted with 3 or 4 drops of dish wash liquid mixed in a cup of water. re-wet your finger after each wipe, peel of the tape while the silicone is still wet ;-))

Good advice there Wasi... have dried the coil out for 3 days now but when I try it on the detector it just falses like a bi7ch and wont ground balance.
Is it recoverable or does it have to go back to Fisher? Or do I open it up and have a look see?

You would think for the price of the coils First Texas could actually make them ALL waterproof -

Kinda makes you think twice about spending over a grand for a unit with a possible design flaw to start with -

Hey latch I tried silicone around where the cable goies into the coil and that fixed my problem for a while. The coil had had water leak into it a couple of times before the silicone treatment. After a few monthes the silicone must have failed or the bolt holes leaked and the coil never recovered from that. So now I own a 10 inch coil that has leaked and is covered in silicone so I doubt fisher would want to look at it. Bit of a shame really.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I'm almost ready to buy my Teknetics, so I guess I'll be sealing that sucker up from new. If you are going to get a new coil I suggest getting it from the NZ Dealer as from what I can gather there are many clones out there. For my new machine I would say that the 5" coil is most likely going to get a hammering, any one had a problem with those ?
