Mate..WOW!!! What a simply awesome find. I am speechless. THAT is the sort of thing I dream of finding. Sooo much history and sentiment attached to such a small but important object. The mind just runs wild with the possibilities of the feelings and emotions that lie behind this small object.
Was this the last thing a son gave to his mother before boarding the troop ship bound for Gallipoli.... never to return to her loving arms? Was it lost in the ensuing frenzy of the a Mother, reunited with her son after so many years at War? Just imagine the tears of sorrow or joy spilt over this precious momento.. .all for the love of a son for his mother.
Mate, to me that kind of find ( and of course the returned services badge reunited with family) is the very reason I love this hobby with a passion.
This is by far the best find I have seen this year on any forum (in my humble opinion) and would have to rate up there with the best I have ever seen dug from NZ soil.
Huge congrats dude...just epic.
Yes, I'm ranting but that kind of find is my thing....simply an epic find.
Thanks for sharing mate.

Cheers for that number8, you've really opened up my eyes on this one, I thought it was unusual to have the word 'mother' on it & couldn't find a great deal of info on the net so thanks again man I can really picture those scenarios.

See attached TM link. The same badge (pretty rare too!) but without the "personalisation".....outstanding find ma-man.

congratulations coinnut, a stunning find indeed.
a truly incredible piece of history.

if you want some friendly nz expert, contact fella from www.milimem.com

can't find the paperspast article notifying issue,
but they obviously did, unless maybe it's a one-off [?]
further research needed, but in the mean-time,
-in the eyes of the law, someone owes someone else 10 pounds.
-plenty of roast dinner invites over the next 2 weeks in mt roskill.

good luck everyone
