According to my (very amateur) research he owns a permit for about 14km of the Nevis river bed, god knows how much that would cost. Anyway I've always been fascinated by the Nevis and would love to hear how he's been getting on there, and also how he managed to get a permit in a river so revered by fish and game! Hopefully I'll see him on the river one day when I'm having a fish (no fossicking though ofcourse!). haha

The permit no. is 41851 if anyone is interested in having a look. I've only recently got into gold fossicking so I know very little, but I imagine that sort of claim would be very hard to capture wouldn't it???

Maybe he is trying to have a last grab at the gold before they turn it into a lake for power generation. I am not sure how far that last idea has progressed.

Absolutely wonderful valley. Everyone should go there at least once in their lifetime. Best hare hunting spot in the country.

The last I heard the bid for power generation had finally been turned down because of the discovery of a rare native fish, the Gollum Galaxius. Apparantly the Nevis is one of only a few rivers in the country that hold these fish. I heard a while back that an overseas company had plans to do some exploration drilling for shale oil up there, wish they'd just leave the place alone.

I've been up there a couple of times, made the mistake of trying to go up from the Garston end in my pseudo 4wd, needless to say I only got through a few fords before I gave up. Still it was an interesting day, the weather looked rubbish while driving up but once I got above the low lying cloud it was blue skies and a beautiful day up there!
