I found this coin on the beach last Sunday. I thought it was a old tarnished 10c then I wiped it and it was gold colored, so I thought it was a beat up $1 but it was thinner.
After soaking and a scrub a copper colored core is showing in places.
There are traces of edge milling.
Truly mystified as what it is or was.

Hi All

Maybe a counterfeit half sovereign. They did exist, do a google on sovereigns. Chrispy told me about them.

looks pretty munted to me. American quarters used to have a copper core.

If you take a diameter reading with a micrometer and google the dimensions it may produce something. Just a thought if its possible.

Some early sovereigns where made of 'Bartons Metal' which was a sandwhich of copper & gold, is it heavy? could it be real gold?

I feel like its gold coated. maybe a munted counterfeit sovereign or a religious medalion. Its impossible to get a accurate thickness or diameter but it fits the general size of a sovereign.
Anyone know of a jeweller in auckland that will do a acid test for a reasonable price?
I have seen test kits and stones but they seem a bit expensive.

One of the guys at work had a family member who is a keen coin collector. under the magnifying glass he found faint letters around the edge in a few places. Edge milling was just garking from whatever trashed the coin.
He reckons its just been laying on a gravel road and been driven over 10000000000 times.

Awesome, half the fun is identifying a mystery coin.

Happy Hunting
