Hi I'm new to this forum and to prospecting, I was wondering if anyone has tried their luck anywhere in the Taupo region or heard of any places worth trying, I had a go down the dessert road last week, all I found was a heap of black sand, I found a little colour up in coromandel but would like to find some a bit closer to home.

hi mickey
when living in mamaku i hunted for gold alittle try no3 or no2 roads at the back of tepuke i did find alittle there

aparently there is gold very deep down according to a mate that did drilling in the taupo area in the 70s the area has very rich deposits but when taupo blew the ash covered the central north island the ash went as far north as the south side of tepuke
hence the gold there where the ash finished

try the google search "gold tepuke" you will be surprised

Thanks for that, I know the area but didn't know about the mining in the old days, I see a wellington based company is drilling test holes in the same area , thanks again, I might just take a trip and see what I can find.

I used to live in taupo and I tried some of the streams there... didn't see any colour but there was black sands. But the whole te puke thing sounds interesting. I do know that they are testing over near Rotorua for gold and I have found several sites that they think will be gold bearing.

Gold in Taupo

Thank for that info Goldnut, I found out the sulfur lake 15 mins away has lots of gold in the mud on the outflow stream but it's tied up in arsenic ore, whatever that is, might be a bit toxic to go panning without a bio hazard suit tho !

from what I see... just don't put it in your mouth! lol. It will be a gold ore rather than alluvial which means you will have to crush it up... so you will have the gold alongside the arsenic as the byproduct. could be worth it but it seems to be hazardous. check out this page: http://www.galleries.com...ents/arsenic/arsenic.htm gives some info on arsenic.

Sorry for Necroing this post. But this info is invaluable.
I want to head out here and try the streams. As Tarawera covered all the bedrock in a significant coating of ash making it difficult going on land.

I've done significant online searches and have not seen this map. Thankyou.
(I probably need to read more books).
